PERI to hold monthly meeting

STEUBENVILLE — Members of the Jefferson County Chapter of PERI will hold their monthly meeting at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Fiesta Room of Froehlich’s Classic Corner, located at 501 Washington St. in Steubenville.

The purpose of PERI is to “protect and preserve OPERS pension and benefits programs and advocate for changes that are in the best interest of PERI members, while providing value through communication and education of the membership through our districts, local chapters and external partnerships,” officials announced.

PERI opens its regular membership to members of OPERS who have a status of active, retired or disabled. Membership investment can be paid annually or in a one-time life payment.

Class of ’59 to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 held its monthly luncheon July 9. There were 21 guests in attendance. Norina Eroshevich gave the blessing and appreciation was expressed to Ted Gorman for his many successful years at the high school.

The group offered its congratulations to incoming principal, Aaron Newman. Terry Seese provided a cake and happy birthday was sung to Eroshevich and JoAnn Monigold.

The next luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Froehlich’s Classic Corner. To make a reservation, contact Eroshevich at (740) 219-2234. All are welcome to attend.

Seniors planning train trip

TORONTO — The Toronto Senior Citizens group is planning a three-day, two-night Riding the Rails trip in West Virginia Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.

The activity is open to the public. The cost will be $489 per person, with double occupancy for members. The cost is $519 for non-members. Single occupancy will be $688 for members and $718 for non-members.

The package includes two nights lodging, two breakfasts, one lunch, two dinners that include an evening of entertainment, Cass Scenic Railroad, Smoke Hole Caverns, Blackwater Falls State Park, souvenir gift, luggage handling, taxes and meal gratuities and motorcoach transportation.

‘Ballet Under the Stars” set

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Ballet Theater will hold its annual “Ballet Under the Stars” performance Aug. 24 at the Middle Road Concert Area in Hartwood Acres Park. The family-friendly event will offer a one-of-a-kind ballet experience under the open sky and is part of Allegheny County’s 2025 Summer Concert Series.

The performance will include a sneak peek of the theater’s 2025-26 season, past favorites and two original works choreographed by artists Matthew Griffin and Madison Russo.

“We love performing Ballet Under the Stars on the beautiful outdoor stage at Hartwood Acres,” said Adam McKinney, PBT artistic director. “It is a delight to share our dancing and artistry with Pittsburgh audiences, as well as to have the opportunity to interact with them during the event.”

Events will include: Free pre-show family activities, including picnics, food trucks, grab-and-go ballet crafts, face painting, balloon art and mini dance classes led by a PBT teaching artist, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A picnic in the park will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in which attendees can join ballet enthusiasts and PBT’s artistic director, Adam McKinney, under a tent for drinks, dinner and the opportunity to meet and chat with PBT artists. A free mixed repertory performance begins at 7:30 p.m., featuring classical and contemporary ballet works. Performances will include, but are subject to change: “Emeralds Pas de Deux,” “The Mighty Casey,” “Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux,” :Three Preludes,” “Angels in the Architecture,” “Emeralds Pas de Deux,” “Emeralds Pas de Trois,” “Dracula Vignette” and “Finale.”

The 2025-26 season will include: “Dracula,” Oct. 31-Nov. 2, Benedum Center; “The Nutcracker,” Dec. 5-28, Benedum Center; “America 250 with the PBT Orchestra,” Feb. 20-22, Benedum Center; “Spring Mix,” April 10-12, August Wilson African American Cultural Center; and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the PBT Orchestra,” May 15-17, Benedum Center.

Cryptids’ coming to museum

TORONTO — The Historical Society of Toronto will sponsor the program “Cryptids,” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Main Street Museum, located inside the Karaffa Recreation Center on Dennis Way.

Two cryptid researchers, Fred Saluga and Brian Seech, will performing the program, according to Carolyn Walker, president.

Cryptids refers to creatures whose existence is suggested but not scientifically proven, such as Big Foot and the Lochness Monster.
