Mental health exhibit on display
PITTSBURGH — Help shake off those back-to-school jitters by visiting the Mental Health: Mind Matters exhibition at the Carnegie Science Center through Aug. 17.
Explore worrying and coping methods through immersive displays, personal stories and various activities that will bring the subject of mental health to life.
The trilingual exhibition, which includes English, Spanish and French, is included with general admission. The exhibit is packed with powerful, science-backed, stigma-breaking experiences, many of which help students and caregivers to prepare for the upcoming school year.
The exhibition will offer visitors the chance to engage in interactive activities that help recognize and regulate emotions — from expressive art to movement exercises.
Guests will experience mental health challenges by stepping into the world of a family navigating the impact of depression; and encounter the difficulty of engaging in a conversation, while wearing noise-distorting headphones that simulate auditory hallucinations.
The exhibit will offer an opportunity to be part of an activity that helps shred worries through a worry shredder — a symbolic way to release stress and anxiety; to explore the history of mental health and how perceptions and treatments have evolved and to listen to real stories from those living with mental health conditions, to help foster empathy and awareness.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults experiences mental illness each year. In Pennsylvania, 1,814,000 adults — more than six times the population of Pittsburgh — are living with a mental health condition. This exhibit brings awareness to these realities, while providing tools for understanding and support.
