OVHC tournament set

STEUBENVILLE — The Ohio Valley Health Center will hold its fifth-annual Kickin’ it for OVHC Kickball Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at Belleview Park in Steubenville.

Teams are still being sought to enjoy a fun-filled day of kickball and community spiritm organizers state.

Participation will help support the only free medical clinic in Jefferson County — the Ohio Valley Health Center.

Funds raised will be used for the nonprofit’s onsite medication room, which is a lifeline for patients, officials noted.

The day will include drawings and prizes.

To become involved, residents can sign up to be on a team, to become a sponsor or to donate a drawing basket.

The cost is $200 for a co-ed team of 10 players. There is a minimum of two women per team. The tournament will be a double elimination.

Register by noon on Friday. Awards will be given for the best team and best uniforms.

Classrooms and Community giveaway

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County Young Professionals, in partnership with the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, will present its first Classrooms and Community event from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the Main Library, located at 407 S. Fourth St.

Students and teachers preparing for the school year, will be given school supplies through this event, according to officials.

Sponsorships are being sought.

All of the proceeds will go toward the purchase of supplies.

Local organizations and businesses interested in contributing as a $250 sponsor, will receive recognition across multiple platforms, including their logo featured on the event banner, social media shout-outs, a thank-you insert inside each supply bag listing all sponsors and recognition in an e-mail sent to the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce’s database.

Businesses interested in donating a specific item for the giveaway bags, are asked to provide 500 items for inclusion in students’ bags or 200 items for teachers’ bags.

This will help ensure every bag is equal and consistent, organizers stated.

Golf benefit set for Saturday

STEUBENVILLE — The eighth-annual Josh Merriman Foundation Golf Outing will be held Saturday at the Steubenville Country Club.

Past events have drawn more than 50 two-player teams, according to organizers.

Two tee times will be available, with the first to begin in the morning, and the second to be held in the afternoon.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for local high school graduates.

There were 16 students from 13 area schools who were this year’s recipients. Proceeds are used to provide talks at local schools on the issue of mental health and deterring teen suicide.

A drawing will be held to win a hand-made Crown Royal quilt. Chances will cost $5 for one or six chances for $20.

Vitalant to hold blood drives

WEIRTON — The nonprofit group Vitalant is urging all eligible donors to take an hour to give blood amidst the August hustle of summer fun and back-to-school activities.

All donors who give blood through Aug. 28 and who are opted in to Vitalant Donor Rewards program, will receive a $10 gift card, along with a chance to win one of three $10,000 gift cards during the Summer Gas Giveaway contest.

Donors of all blood types are vital to helping patients, especially those with type O and platelet donors.

Type O donors can help most patients in emergencies. Platelet donors are in high demand.

Platelets are often used to help cancer patients and are critical in stopping bleeding, officials commented.

The following drives will be held locally.

Upcoming drives will include: Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 162 Fairmont Pike Road, Wheeling, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 17; and St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Fellowship Hall, 300 Three Springs Drive, Weirton, 12;30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 18.
