WEIRTON — When volunteers with the Community Bread Basket opened their mail last week, they received a letter with a donation enclosed. Officials were so touched with the contribution and letter, they wanted to share the experience with the community.
Melissa Wyatt of Weirton wrote to the nonprofit organization, informing them what her children, Corey and Brooke, had done.
According to CBB President Marilyn Charnie, who met the family and took their photo, she was “so touched with their kindness to the community.” The children’s mother explained how her son and daughter decided to donate the money to a worthy organization in the community, rather than buy useless toys. The money was raised through a cookie and lemonade stand during the Marland Heights Community Yard Sale. Wyatt provided her children a list of local organizations, reading a brief description of what each does for the community. The children decided they would like the money to go to the CBB.
Charnie said she was “very grateful that the children understood and appreciated the work that was done by the Community Bread Basket.”
The nonprofit is a local food pantry, serving Brooke and Hancock counties, providing food to those who qualify based on financial needs. A Gabriel Room offers clothing and items for people in need. The CBB has provided utility assistance in the past as well.
“The number of people that the Community Bread Basket has been serving, has drastically increased over the past year,” officials stated. “The increased cost of food has also impacted them. If you’re in need of assistance, please give their office a call.” The office can be reached at (304) 758-7595. Those wanting to make a financial donation can mail it to: Community Bread Basket, P.O. Box 154, Weirton, WV 26062. The agency accepts food, donations, soap, daily hygiene products and diapers. Contributions can be dropped off on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Located in the rear of 3545 Pennsylvania Ave. on the bottom floor, the CBB is in need of volunteers. “We would like to extend a thank you to everyone in the community who has supported us over the past 20 years,” officials commented. “We couldn’t do ‘our work’ without the financial support from the churches, businesses and residents of our communities, in addition to food donations and the many hours of work provided by all our volunteers.”
