STEUBENVILLE — The Sycamore Youth Center was alive with laughter and creativity, as 30 area students between the ages of 12 and 18 took to the stage for the nonprofit’s Drama Camp.

Students met from noon to 4 p.m. June 23-27, participating in a performance of a one-act comedy entitled, “Bad Auditions by Bad Actors.”

Led by Director Naedia McCann, an 18-year-old college freshman at Franciscan University of Steubenville, the camp offered participants hands-on experience in acting, stage crew and production basics.

“It was amazing to watch the students come out of their shells,” McCann said. “They went from shy introductions on day one, to confidently performing a comedy full of over-the-top characters by the end of the week. I’m so proud of how much they grew and the friendships they formed.”

The camp’s final performance took place June 27. It was an evening filled with friends, family and community members “roaring with laughter as the students brought the zany script to life,” according to Bobbyjon Bauman, executive director of the Sycamore Youth Center.

From flustered casting directors to eccentric auditioning actors, the students showcased not only comedic timing, but impressive teamwork behind the scenes.

Bauman praised the campers and the director for their dedication.

“Naedia did an outstanding job leading this camp with enthusiasm and professionalism far beyond her years,” Bauman said. “It was incredible to see 30 students working together, building confidence and having a blast. This is exactly the kind of positive, skill-building experience we aim to provide through our summer programs.”

The Sycamore Drama Camp is one of 18 free summer camps offered by the Sycamore center, giving local youth opportunities to discover new talents, connect with peers and thrive in a supportive environment. For information about upcoming camps and programs, visit sycamorecenter.com.
