Firefighters speak to Toronto Seniors group
TORONTO — Members of the Toronto Senior Citizens met at the Karaffa Recreation Center July 17 for their monthly meeting.
Chaplain Arlene Obertance-Rice provided the blessing before a catered dinner consisting of chicken tenders, baked beans, potato salad and dessert.
Toronto firefighters Mary Bender and Anthony Middleton addressed those in attendance, offering a presentation on the Red Cross-funded program Sound the Alarm.
According to Bender and Middleton, firefighters will inspect and install new smoke detectors free of charge to seniors residing in Toronto and Knox Township. Those outside of Toronto will be referred by the fire department to the Red Cross for assistance, they noted.
Obertance-Rice gave a reading in honor of the Fourth of July, entitled “George Washington,” followed by members joining in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.
President John Livingstone called on officers for their reports.
Secretary Joyce Zimmerman reported on the minutes from the June meeting.
Treasurer Patty Smith provided the financial report.
Social Secretary Peggy Ziarko thanked the kitchen committee and noted those celebrating a birthday or anniversary for the month of June.
Ziarko noted those members who are sick or in the hospital.
The group welcomed new member, Gene Viola.
An update was given regarding the August meeting, which will include a Chinese theme with decorations and feature a Chinese auction as a fundraiser for the club. The business meeting adjourned and members took part in playing games and bingo.
A 50/50 drawing was held, with Mary Lou Sutton winning $122. Karen Thorton was the winner of the basket drawing. There were 10 door prize winners for July, with items being donated by past president Judy Bickler.
Bingo winners included: Mary Ann Whalen, $27; Terry Mamula, Pat Pfabe and Becky Swickard shared $27; Nancy Ramsey, $27; and cover all was won by Glenda Matheson, $36.
The next meeting will be held Aug. 21 at the Karaffa center.
