Annual Newell Fun Day event set for Saturday
NEWELL — Leave your water balloons at home … you are not going to need them. For there will be enough water to go around, as an epic water battle will be among the activities set to take place during the third-annual Newell Fun Day.
The event, set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, will take place at the former Wells Building which currently houses the Newell Community Center.
Hosted by the Newell Community Improvement Coalition and the Newell Volunteer Fire Department, this year’s fun day will feature several activities for community members of all ages.
Among the day’s entertainment will be a dunk tank, a cornhole tournament, inflatables, bump basketball and various food trucks on site. In addition, a foam party is set from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The musical group Route 45 will entertain audiences between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
According to Shannon Giambroni, spokesperson for the coalition, residents are encouraged to gather all of their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to line up along state Route 2.
Why? Because from Second Street to Clarke Field, floats which are equipped with water will travel the route to begin an ultimate water battle against spectators.
Those who are interested in participating in the water parade can register and line up at Sixth and Grant streets, Giambroni noted.
“There will be 50-gallon drums of water along the parade route for spectators to continually fill their squirt guns to retaliate against the floats,” she commented. “Hancock County Savings Bank donated 300 squirt guns to give away.”
This year’s floats will be judged, officials stated, adding the first-place winner will have an opportunity to win a one-year pass for the Wayne Six Toll Bridge. There are still a few spots available.
Those interested can register by visiting newellcoalition.org.
The Newell Coalition will host a drawing, with all of the proceeds going toward future Fun Day events. There will be a grand prize drawn prior to the parade, worth more than $1,500, officials noted.
Drawing prizes will include cash, gift cards, a fire pit, a canopy, a beach wagon, stays at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort, stays at Tomlinson Run State Park and more.
Tickets are $10 each or three for $20. Winners need not be present.
Tickets can be purchased at the event or by contacting Giambroni at (304) 479-0141.
