STEUBENVILLE — Cub Scout Pack 3 of Steubenville spent their weekend honoring local heroes who served the United States military in recognition of Memorial Day, to be celebrated on Monday.

Members of Pack 3 placed American flags on several veterans’ graves in Steubenville’s Union Cemetery.

The Scouts paid tribute to those who served in conflicts ranging from the American Revolution to the Vietnam War.

The members, some as young as 6 years old, walked solemnly among the headstones in the cemetery.

They paused at each of the graves that were marked by worn military plaques and weathered stones.

Among them were the headstones of those who battled during the Civil War and World War I.

“It is important to educate the future about those who fought for our freedom and country and pay our respect any way we can,” commented Adult Leader Lolo Orsini.

Among those honored were veterans from World War II, Korea and a soldier from the American Revolution, whose presence in the historic cemetery “underscores the deep roots of military service in the Ohio Valley, Orsini said.

Ten-year-old Dominic Plante, a Webelos Scout, shared his thoughts on being there for the veterans.

“It felt really special to do something for the soldiers, especially those who gave their lives for our country,” Plante stated.

Cubmaster Michael Graul said the event was educational and emotional, connecting the young Scouts to the enduring values of patriotism and remembrance.

“We want our Scouts to understand that freedom comes with sacrifice, and this is a way they can give back to those who were willing to sacrifice everything,” Graul exclaimed.

The event kicked off the pack’s summer activities, which include outdoor adventures, service projects and camping, aimed at building leadership and outdoor skills in a fun, hands-on environment.
