Life Recovery group to meet

STEUBENVILLE — Starkdale Presbyterian Church will hold its Life Recovery group from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the church, located at 4600 Sunset Blvd.

The evening’s speaker will be Sammy Gaetano, who is active in Pittsburgh’s Life Recovery program.

Gaetano will speak on how he changed his life of addiction through a 12-step, Christ-centered Biblical program. Refreshments will be served.

Finley Church to hold VBS

STEUBENVILLE — Finley Church, located on Lincoln Avenue in Steubenville, will hold its True North Vacation Bible School for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through June 5. Organizers stated children will have the opportunity to “discover what it means to trust Jesus in a wild world.”

There will be Bible-learning activities, the singing of songs, playing teamwork-building games, making and eating treats, experiencing “one-of-a-kind Bible adventures,” collecting Bible memory buddies to remind each participant of Jesus’s love, testing fun science experiments and making memories one will never forget.

VBS event coming to Wellsburg

WELLSBURG — Wellsburg First Church of God will present a Wild West Vacation Bible School event for children in preschool through fifth grade.

The class will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 14 at the Betty Carr Shelter at 18th Street Park in Wellsburg.

Children will participate in Bible-based lessons about Jesus, play games, make crafts and listen to music.

The VBS event is free of charge.

Lunch will be provided.

Dino Dash registration to end

STEUBENVILLE — The annual Dino Dash 5k Run/Walk will take place during the Dean Martin Hometown Festival at 9 a.m. June 14 at Historic Beatty Park.

The run/walk is one of the park’s biggest events of the year, according to Flora VerStraten-Merrin, founder of the Friends of Beatty Park volunteer group.

Hosted by the Dean Martin Association, Steubenville Parks and Recreation, the Jefferson County General Health District and supported by the Friends of Beatty Park, the race will be run on two nature trails inside the park — the Purple Trail and the Red Trail.

The race will include dirt trails in wooded areas which have small bridges, a creek crossing and a few small natural obstacles.

The event will include uphill areas and a short loop in the adjacent historical Union Cemetery. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the park, located at 621 Lincoln Ave.

Award categories will be determined based on the number of participants.

All Tot Trot participants will receive a medal.

The final day to register and be guarantee a T-shirt, will be Sunday.

Humane society to hold events

WINTERSVILLE — The Jefferson County Humane Society will hold two large events on June 14, beginning with the nonprofit agency’s ninth-annual 5k Run/Walk, scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

An open house will begin at 11 a.m. at the shelter, located at 200 Airpark Road in Wintersville. The money raised during this year’s walk and run event will go toward animals within the community.

Shelter officials stated, “The race course is challenging, but fun when you bring your best friend along.”

To participate in the 5k, the cost will be $35 until May 31. Beginning June 1, the cost will increase, officials said.

Attendees are welcome to bring their friendly pet to the event on a leash, in a carrier or in a stroller.

Those who are unable to attend the walk/run, but want to assist the humane society, can sponsor a shelter dog that will be walked in the event by a volunteer.

At the conclusion of the walk/run, an open house will begin, at approximately 11 a.m., officials noted.

The event is free of charge.

Items and activities will be available for the various donation amounts.

Activities and services will include: Microchipping and nail trimming, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a pet beach costume contest, noon; and Rent-a-Dog activity to take s shelter dog for a walk or spend playtime together, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the open house, guests can take part in any of the following activities: An agility course/pet pool party set up in a play concession stand, meet Pygmy goats, horseback rides for children, learn about lizards and snakes, take a behind-the-scenes tour, a puppy/kitten adoption area, information booths and a fourth-grade entrepreneur store to purchase items.

More activities will be added, officials noted.

Numerous tables will be set up, featuring every facet of the humane society.

According to officials, tables will be set up for information regarding the humane society’s volunteers, foster families and clinic workers.

The Jefferson County Health Department will feature a table dedicated to learning about the topic of animal lead poisoning, as well as other pet-related concerns owners and fosters should know about.
