Custer observance set for June 7

NEW RUMLEY — The Custer Memorial Association will observe one of America’s most famous and successful military figures — Ulysses S. Grant — during a presenation entitled, “Grant and Custer in the Civil War.”

The event will feature historian Curt Fields Jr., who will bring Grant to life as he portrays the general and president — a job he has been doing since 2009.

Having appeared on the National Geographic Channel, the Discovery Channel and in numerous videos for the National Parks, Fields researches and reads about Grant extensively in order to deliver an accurate persona of the general.

His presentations are done in the first person, quoting from Grant’s memoirs.

He speaks as to the articles and letters he has written, the statements he has made during interviews, statements he has written himself, first-person accounts of people who knew the general or who were with him and witnessed his actions during various events.

Fields is the same height and body style as Grant.

“He presents a convincing, true-to-life image of the man as he really looked,” officials commented.

He has performed in front of audiences in 22 states.

The day will start at 9 a.m. with registration for the Custer Cruise-in Car Show. Registration will be $10. Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 registrants.

Door prizes and a 50/50 drawing will be available.

There will be 22 trophies awarded during the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Music will be provided by J.T. Thompson of Scio at 11 a.m. at the monument.

Members of the Scio American Legion Post 482 will post the colors.

Rick Williams will portray Gen. Custer, who will distribute the awards during the ceremony.

Leroy VanHorne will serve as master of ceremonies, welcoming guests and introducing those to be honored.

Mandal Haas of Carrolton will have his Civil War cannon at this year’s event. Civil War artillery and infantry reenactors will be on hand to explain their weapons and equipment. They will give demonstrations on the weapons’ use.

Custer will give a briefing on cavalry weapons of the period.

Time will be given for guests to enjoy lunch at the New Rumley Global Methodist Church and visit the Custer Museum and Center.

Musicians Steve and Lisa Ball will return, performing songs of the Civil War period, along with historical information on the songs inside the church sanctuary.

Following their program, the car show awards will be presented.

“The day’s events culminate with Gen. Custer’s remarks,” officials said. “There is the possibility of an auction of Custer-related items, if time permits.”

Scholarships available

WEST LIBERTY — The West Liberty University Foundation has announced that two previously-established scholarships have reached the level of permanent endowment, which now ensures their availability to support students in perpetuity.

The scholarship was founded in 2022 by friends and Steubenville High School graduates John Blangor, Bryan Bunch, Neal Hudson and Clifton Spinner.

The strong bond between the men began forming during their childhood and carried over into their time as student athletes while attending Steubenville High School, and later, at West Liberty University.

Their collective passion for giving back — especially to students from their hometown — has led them to establish this scholarship, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent Steubenville graduates from pursuing a higher education at West Liberty.

The Blangor, Bunch, Hudson and Spinner Scholarship will be available to award for the 2026-27 academic year, according to officials.

Students, especially those from SHS, are encouraged to apply for the scholarship, the foundation stated.
