Toronto Library announces events

TORONTO — The Toronto Library will hold Book Club at 10:30 a.m. May 13. Adults are asked to read the book “The Night We Lost Him,” by Laura Dave. Participants will discuss the reading during the event. To join, call the library at (740) 537-1262.

Children will have the opportunity to join their parent or guardian during Play and Learn the Alphabet, an activity which promotes alphabet knowledge, at 11 a.m. May 14. The program is for children ages birth to 4. Registration is required.

Steubenville school retirees to meet

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville City Schools Retirees met for lunch April 10 at Basil’s Sports Bar and Grill in Weirton. Members noted there was a “nice turnout” of participants who enjoyed one another’s company. During the luncheon, cards were passed around for retirees to sign. They will be mailed to those individuals from the group who are ill.

Officials noted those in attendance received a surprise, as they discovered their server is the son of a Steubenville retiree. Retirees will hold their next luncheon May 8 at Capraro’s Restaurant and Lounge in Hopedale.

Three Score Senior Club meets

WEIRTON — The April meeting of the Three Score Seniors Club was called to order by President Frank Bohach. Bob DiFonzo led in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of “America the Beautiful.”

Following dinner, members were entertained by Jack Giacomel, who played the keyboard and sang songs. Bohach and George Pohlman entertained with jokes.

Secretary Barbara Purks read the minutes from the March meeting and Treasurer Brenda Edwards gave the treasurer’s report. Sunshine Chair Winnie Kemp recognized those celebrating an April birthday, including Edwards, Lee Edwards, Ed Powell and Ron Baker. Kemp recognized Leonard and Dolores Ginier, who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

Membership Chair Mary Bohach reported on the number of those who will be attending, as well as the menu for May’s meeting. She provided some information regarding plans for the club’s 50-year celebration. Kemp introduced Ron Baker as helping her.

Prize winners for the evening included George Pohlman, JoAnn Kerr, Baker, Sandra Briggs, Powell, Rob Klepadlo and Kathy McCarrick.

‘Wizard of Oz’ coming to Benedum

PITTSBURGH — Septime Webre’s “The Wizard of Oz,” with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater orchestra, will premier May 9-18 at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh.

This version stays true to the classic movie and book and includes all of L. Frank Baum’s signature characters, bringing to life the Emerald City through flying sequences, costumes, sets, special effects, choreography and original music from Matthew Pierce, played live by the orchestra.

Follow Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion, during their adventure as they travel into the land of Oz to find the wizard and battle the Wicked Witch of the West.

“We are thrilled to invite audiences to follow us down the yellow brick road with Septime Webre’s imaginative and entertaining ‘The Wizard of Oz,'” stated Adam McKinney, artistic director at the ballet theater. “I am so excited to share this amazing ballet with Pittsburghers as the closing work for our amazing 55th anniversary season.”
