WHEELING -- On Saturday, Scouting America's Mountaineer Area Council welcomed approximately 300 Scouts from across the region to Merit Badge University. Hosted at West Virginia University, the educational opportunity provided Scouts BSA members a chance to work on a variety of merit badges taught by university professors and industry professionals. Throughout the day, Scouts engaged in hands-on learning experiences and gained insight into potential career paths. Many participants were able to earn a merit badge or two if they had all of their prerequisites completed in advance, officials stated.
This year's merit badge offerings included aviation, chemistry, crime prevention, dentistry, engineering, first aid, health care, mining in society, nuclear science and more. Each course was designed to provide Scouts with real-world knowledge and skills taught by experts in the field.
"Merit Badge University provides Scouts with an incredible opportunity to learn from professionals in their respective fields, gain hands-on experience and explore potential career paths," stated Amy Garbrick, Mountaineer Area Council president. "We are grateful for our continued partnership with West Virginia University and to the professionals who dedicate their time to making this event a valuable learning experience." The event highlights Scouting's commitment to personal development, leadership and lifelong learning. By working closely with experts and completing requirements in a structured setting, Scouts gain hands-on experience that extends beyond traditional classroom learning.
