SHS to hold blood drive
STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville High School will hold its second blood drive of the year to help the American Red Cross. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school's new gymnasium. Sponsored by the NIKE Club, members will volunteer at stations as Red Cross personnel handles the collection, according to adviser Katrina Morrow.
"Our goal is to collect 25 units for this blood drive," she stated. "This will help get us close to the 75-unit minimum for two scholarships for seniors who have donated at all of the blood drives this school year. There will be one more drive on Feb. 11." Last year, the school collected 88 units to support their community. The school collected 23 units during its previous campaign in September. Their overall hope? To save lives.
The national blood supply fell by more than 25 percent since July 1, Red Cross officials announced, stressing the necessity for donations. Donors have the option of giving whole blood or completing the Power Red contribution that collects red cells and returns most of the plasma and platelets back to the donor. Donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A-Negative, B-Negative or O blood.
To donate, one must be 16 years of age, in good health and have a signed, parental consent form if donating at 16. Walk-ins will be welcome. Pre-registration is being accepted online. Contributors can use the Rapid Pass on the day of the drive, answering questions to reduce their wait time. Those wanting to register can visit the website redcrossblood.org.
