Legal Aid to hold record-sealing clinic
STEUBENVILLE -- Those affiliated with Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio will be offering a Fresh Start Friday clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in its Steubenville office, located on the second floor of 500 Market St.
Formerly known as Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, the clinic is being held to assist people who have past criminal records either seal or expunge their records.
Many Ohioans with past criminal records were previously ineligible for record sealing or expungement, according representatives with legal services. However, a law passed in 2023 makes some of those individuals who were previously ineligble, eligible. Lawyers will be available to screen participants for eligibility in sealing or expunging their record. They also will help applicants with paperwork. Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is encouraged, officials stated. Walk-in clients will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis, but officials cannot guarantee service to those who are not pre-registered.
Those interested in attending can pre-register online or by calling (614) 827-0524. The clinic is free of charge and available to those who meet eligibility and income requirements, generally less than 200 percent of the federal poverty guideline. Legal Aid officials noted records cannot be sealed for those who are currently on probation, community control or who have an open case. Traffic cases and OVIs are not eligible to be sealed or expunged.
Dolly Day coming to Brooke Library
WELLSBURG -- Officials with the Brooke County Public Library are making preparations to celebrate Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Day -- Dolly Day event. The Dolly Day events will feature a read-aloud of the book "I Am A Rainbow," at 11 a.m. Friday at the front circle of the library beside the flagpole.
Following the reading, those attending will enjoy taking part in sidewalk art, games, snacks and fun activities, according to organizers. Each month, the Imagination Library mails more than 2 million high-quality, age-appropriate books to children birth to 5 years of age who are enrolled. Library officials stated Parton envisioned being able to create a lifelong love of reading and inspiring children to "Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More."

Family of God Church to hold VBS
WEIRTON -- Family of God Church, located at 128 Era St. in Weirton, will hold a Vacation Bible School program from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at the church. The Revs. Craig and Kim Greathouse will be on hand to help with Bible stories, singing, games, an inflatable bounce house and picnic celebration. Children not old enough to attend school must have a parent accompany them at the VBS. The public is invited to attend. Those who have not yet registered are asked to bring a white T-shirt to the church to be used in a craft.
Book club at Brooke Library
WELLSBURG -- Friends, a good book and free-flowing discussion. These things are the ingredients for what can be a wonderful experience at the Brooke County Public Library. The branch's book club will meet at 5 p.m. Aug. 29 in person and virtually to discuss the book "The Dog Stars," by Peter Heller.
Participants will receive the book for September at the meeting. The club is free of charge and open to the public. Those interested in taking part virtually can contact the library for the meeting ID and password. The book can be requested and placed on hold for free by visiting the website wvreads.overdrive.com or by obtaining an actual copy from the library director.
