SAA’s Spring Exhibit art show continues at EGCC through May 10

STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Art Association held the grand opening of its 76th-annual Spring Exhibit art show Saturday. Approximately 100 guests were in attendance at Eastern Gateway Community College, studying 150 pieces of art and viewing the awards ceremony.
The event was organized by Jim and JoAnn Watson, who have taken on the task for almost two decades. Winners were determined by professional art show judges from the Butler Museum in Youngstown. Show officials said judges remarked they were surprised by the local talent they saw.
SAA President Judy Schmidt served as master of ceremonies, introducing the SAA board and recognized SAA Vice President Alysia Basluke, Treasurer Deanna Irvin, Secretary Francesca Veltri, and trustees JoAnn Watson, James Clum and Jeanne D'Anniballe.
"These are the people who keep the SAA going and work to make it better every day," she stated. "The SAA did fundraising benefits this year for the Fort, Beatty Park and the local animal shelter, presenting more than $1,000 to these causes," she continued. "This year, we received two grants from the Ohio Arts Council. For the first time in 78 years, we have adopted a logo for the SAA. Many thanks to the board and members of the club."
The Best of Show Award was presented to Clum for his piece, "Table With A View." Merit Awards went to Cecy Rose, Ashley Otto, Alan Fitzpatrick, Kayla JoLynn Jackson, Basluke, Denise Gordon, Ed Green and Dean Mossor. Honorable Mention winners were Debra Kimball, June Bucher, Amber Evans, Janet Hart, Chris Hoke, Andy Luptak, Sandra Hadsell, D'Anniballe, Schmidt and Mary Keenan.
Special awards were given in memory of loved ones, including Steve Opet, the James Kaufmann Memorial; Gina Judy, the Janet Hambelton Memorial; Robert Watson, the Virginia Price Memorial; and William Koch, the Dale Biesecker Memorial Award.
The exhibit can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, concluding May 10. Some pieces will be for sale. Anyone interested in buying a piece, can contact Schmidt at (740) 424-3835.
Students Carmela Buffone and Mark Antonio, received $500 and $200 scholarships, respectively. The SAA thanked EGCC staff for help with the show; Julie Stenger and Chris Dacanay for writing newspaper articles; and Jerry Barilla, Judy Bratten and the visitor's center staff for "giving us a home and support."
