TORONTO -- The Toronto Sunrise Seniors Club welcomed Ann McGrath and Jackie Porter to its membership during the group's Saturday meeting held at the Karaffa Recreation Complex.
President Barbara Pritts selected Brenda Fetty and Bill Edwards as the seniors' Valentine's Day royalty, after a random drawing of names was conducted. The duo was presented with crowns, beads and candy-filled wands.
"This bit of silliness was a good way to start the meeting," officials stated.
Pritts then gave the blessing prior to the covered dish meal being served. When finished, members stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, after which Pritts introduced guest speaker Becky Foster.
Foster is a volunteer ombudsman for residents of local nursing homes. She explained her job is to advocate for excellence in long-term care facilities.
Ombudsmen representatives perform a variety of services to help improve the quality of care being offered, Foster explained.
"Ombudsmen staff and volunteers are carefully screened, trained and certified to serve and advocate for the nursing home residents," she stated. "They listen to the resident's complaints and help to find care solutions. They stand up for the resident's right to make their own decisions and teach community members about long-term care and resident rights. They visit facilities and residents often."
Those in attendance thanked Foster for her dedication and willingness to serve the community.
In other matters, Secretary Laura Sheets read the minutes of the previous meeting and conducted the roll call of officers. Social Secretary Marlene Garrett announced the February birthdays and anniversaries and thanked the kitchen committee which includes, Mary Edwards, Bill Edwards, Bea Lytle and Paulette Reed.
The kitchen committee who will serve at the March meeting are Barbara Pritts, Don Pritts, Lynn Miller, Nancy Bodrog and Sheets.
Two individuals were remembered under the health report.
Sandi Radvansky was recognized as member of the month and presented with a small gift.
The evening activity involved playing, "The Price Is Right." Five grocery items were explained in detail, with members writing down their bids on a piece of paper. Nancy Ramsey, Phyllis Smith, Mary Murphy, Ruth White and Edwards were the closest bidders and awarded the item as their prize. Bodrog had the closest bid on a 2024 all-electric Tesla car. Imagine her dismay when she discovered her prize was a Hot Wheels version of the vehicle.
Winners of the 50/50 drawing were Fetty and Murphy.
Following announcements and brag time, the meeting was adjourned.
Members then enjoyed playing bingo, with winners for the evening including Louie Nelson, Mary Ann Landerfield, Joyce Gribben, Garrett, Lucy Timko, Betty Mossor, Pritts, Smith, Lytle, Marsha McConnell and Porter.
The next meeting of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors will be Feb. 23. Any Ohio resident 55 years of age or older is welcome to join the group.
