STEUBENVILLE -- After celebrating the goodness of God last Sunday with guest preacher, the Rev. Calvin McLoyd Jr., officials at Quinn Memorial AME Church will be enjoying a season of gratitude for Black History -- which has too often been lost, stolen or denied through the years, they said.
The theme for this year's celebration is, "Standing for Equity, Inclusion and Justice for All."
"Representatives from the NAACP, the National Action Network, the National Association of Colored Women, Black Entrepreneurs and City Council will help us commemorate the contributions of those who preceded us and spur us forward to continue the work in spite of the challenge," stated the Rev. Buena Smith Dudley.
Speakers will include, Mike McIntyre, Elder Michael Jett, Eliza Kelly, Councilman Royal Mayo, Rose Slaughter, Carol Ann Simmons and Jacqueline Lyles Gibson.
"We have received a proclamation from city council recognizing February as Black History Month in Steubenville and we are looking forward to the presence of Mayor Jerry Barilla," Dudley commented.
Quinn Memorial will host its annual Valentine's extravaganza with the theme, "Let's Celebrate Love," at 2 p.m. Feb 10. This year's luncheon will include a style show featuring men and women of all ages from the church and the community. Tina Hines will be the commentator. Valentine's gifts and treats will be offered.
"We look forward to fun, fellowship, food and laughter in our newly-renovated fellowship hall," Dudley concluded. Black History coordinators for the event are Gibson and Simmons; and those coordinating the Valentine's extravaganza are Eloise Curenton and Soundra Palmer.
