STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red Crimson Jazz Band is setting the tone for an evening of music. The band will be sharing the stage for its "Jazz with Friends" event, beginning at 7 p.m. today in the Steubenville High School auditorium. The night will feature the Indian Creek High School Jazz Band and with the Ohio University Jazz Ensemble. The performance is free to attend. Donations will be accepted to benefit all of the bands participating, officials stated.

"This is our first winter jazz performance," director Rosalind Thacker said. "The purpose is to bring great jazz music to the community and draw attention to jazz music and connections with Black History Month. The musical collaboration with Indian Creek, Ohio University and Big Red provides students with a new musical opportunity. It also provides students with the opportunity to experience collegiate performance groups."

Big Red's band includes 19 musicians. Indian Creek yields 31 players. Ohio University has 17 performers. The tunes being performed include, "Go For It," "5.4 on the Richter Scale" and "Just a Closer Walk." These will be directed by Thacker. "Zoot Suit Riot," "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Out of the Doghouse," will be directed by Donald Llewellyn of Indian Creek High School. "Old King Dooji," "Baby Carrots" and "Jeep's Blues," will be directed by Matthew James of Ohio University.

Thacker said the Crimson Jazz Band and the Ohio University Jazz Ensemble will participate in a clinic during the school day in preparation for the evening's performance. A school assembly is planned for 12:45 p.m. today in the school's auditorium. The assembly is in conjunction with the school's Black History Month activities.
