Food handler class set for Wednesday
WEIRTON -- The Hancock County Health Department will conduct a food handler class at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul School cafeteria, located at 140 Walnut St. in Weirton. To enter, press the buzzer located at the main entrance of the building.
The class is open to the public. Any person involved in food service in Hancock County is required to possess a current food handler card, officials stated.
The class is for volunteers as well as those employed in the food service industry.
The class is free of charge; however, there is a $10 fee to receive a food handler card, which is good for one year. A two-year card may be purchased for $20 or a three-year card is available for $30.
"Food safety cannot be taken for granted," officials said. "Food employees must be educated about safe procedures such as personal hygiene, cross contamination and improper cooking and holding temperatures."
Food handler training may be obtained by going to the website Hancockcountyhealthdepartment.com and taking the online course.
Payment for the online class can be made by using a credit card or PayPal account.
Participants can print the complete verification and pay the fee at the Hancock County Health Department during their regular business hours.
Hours are from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call (304) 564-3343.
Church to hold pancake meal
WELLSBURG -- Wellsburg United Methodist Church and Franklin United Methodist Church will team to hold a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day from noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at the downtown church at 11th and Charles streets.
Patrons may dine or take out.

Edison to hold registration
HAMMONDSVILLE -- Edison Local Schools will be hosting registration events for parents of children 3- to 5-years-old, interested in their child attending preschool or kindergarten during the 2024-25 school year.
Edison's Early Childhood Education program has earned the Step Up To Quality Five-Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education.
The program boasts a convenient, five-day per-week schedule at two locations -- John Gregg Elementary School in Bergholz and Stanton Elementary School in Hammondsville.
Students enjoy technology-based iPad learning, allotted times for library, physical education, music, early literacy programming and more.
Jamie Angelini, early childhood education director, is excited about all Edison Local offers its preschool and kindergarten students and believes that getting children off to a solid start at a young age is crucial.
"Early intervention services can change a child's developmental path and improve outcomes for children, families and entire communities," she said, noting families benefit from early intervention by being able to better meet their children's needs from an early age and throughout their lives.
"As we embark upon our upcoming preschool and kindergarten registration, I look forward to meeting and working with all of the new and returning 'little Wildcats' and their families," she said.
Registration will take place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 25 at Stanton, located at 14890 state Route 213, Hammondsville.
Registration will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 26 at John Gregg, located at 212 county Highway 75A, Bergholz.
Parents are asked to bring the following information with them to the registration, with officials noting a birth record does not take the place of an actual birth certificate: The child's birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency and verification of income for preschoolers.
