WINTERSVILLE -- Members of the Wintersville Woman's Club used their creativity and talents to create homemade crafts during the group's monthly meeting at St. Florian Hall.
President Cheryl Taylor presided over the Jan. 18 in which 21 members were in attendance. The club's first gathering of the year featured the program entitled, "Let's get crafty."
Members put their hearts into making special heart-shaped decorations in recognition of Valentine's Day. The crafts will be taken to the residents of Sienna Woods and Magnolia Manor.
Following the craft session, meditation and grace was given by Taylor.
The business meeting opened with Taylor leading in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and club collect.
Recording Secretary Michalene King took roll call, after which she posed the question to members, "Do you do crafts?" in keeping with the program's theme.
Those at the meeting went around the room, answering King's question and providing examples of the crafts they enjoy making in their free time.
The minutes from the Dec. 21 meeting were approved as written.
Treasurer Karen Hill provided the treasurer's report.
Corresponding Secretary Aimee Jaros informed club members she sent cards to those celebrating a birthday this month and mailed get-well cards to those who are ill or in need of prayers and well wishes.
During the business portion of the meeting, committee reports were presented.
Judy Ostrowsky spoke on the topics of art and culture. She thanked everyone in attendance for their participation in making the heart-shaped decorations for those residing in local nursing homes. This will be something special for the homes' residents to enjoy for the upcoming holiday.
Under civic engagement, Lynn Taliani reported she has taken four garbage bags worth of American flags to be destroyed.
There was a brief discussion about the stars being given to veterans and those serving in the military. Taliani stated she will report on this project during a future meeting.
Claudia Dorich updated members on the environment committee's project of collecting tennis shoes. She commented several pairs have been donated by club members -- enough to fill two large bags with tennis shoes of all sizes, genders and brands.
More tennis shoes are waiting to be bagged, Dorich noted, adding she is waiting to receive additional bags before sending the rest on for donation.
Mary Beth Allan spoke on behalf of the membership committee. She announced a membership essay contest is underway, with submissions being accepted by Thursday. The essay should focus on membership in the GFWC. She stated Natalie Doty will be submitting an essay.
The fundraising committee's Pat Ketzell presented a project to members, seeking their thoughts on selling Sarris candy bars. Officials would obtain the candy bars and distribute them to members for them to sell.
Claudia Dorich reported for the scholarship committee. She informed the group one scholarship payment has been made, following receipt of the student's grades. The committee is now awaiting transcripts from the other two scholarship students. The committee will soon be meeting to make revisions in the scholarship procedure, she concluded.
In other business, Allan reported on a program entitled, "Foster Care to Success."
This program focuses on sending Valentine boxes to college students who were foster children. Allan said other GFWC clubs in Ohio have previously donated red scarves for the boxes.
"Our club members and their families have donated six knitted scarves to this organization," Allan said, noting anyone interested in working on this project can reach out to her for information.
She then reported she received a check from Smith Oil receipts. The check was given to Hill for deposit.
Ostrowsky reported on behalf of the nominating committee, saying the following nominations are for 2024-26: Taylor, president; Karen Josefczyk, vice president; Allan, recording secretary; King, correspondence secretary; and Hill, treasurer.
The slate of officers presented before members was unanimously passed. The officers will be installed during the May meeting.
The next meeting will take place at noon on Feb. 15 at St. Florian Hall. The program is entitled, "Have a Heart," and will be bingo prizes for Gable's Care Center, officials said.
It will be presented by a member of the Wintersville Fire and Rescue Department.
