NEW CUMBERLAND -- The New Cumberland Lions Club met for its January meeting, being called to order by Jeanne Cox, second vice president.
Rick Tinsky offered the prayer and Alan Lee led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Members paused to remember Dick Rodgers, who died Dec. 30. Rodgers joined the club in 1955, serving as president from July 1, 1959, through June 30, 1960. He was presented with the Leonard Jarret Award in 2000.
Following the remembrance, the meeting's minutes were accepted as read.
Under communications, a report was given on the correspondence the club has received from the community. It was noted a thank-you card was sent by those at the New Cumberland Food Closet in reference to the Lions' December donation.
A thank-you message was received from the Yellow Ribbon Girls/Blue Star Mothers of Southwest Pennsylvania. The group conveyed its appreciation to the Lions Club for its donation to help aid in efforts to provide necessities to deployed troops.
A thank you was received from the Clarksburg and Huntington Honor Flight for the donation it received from the club. The money will go toward efforts in transporting veterans of World War II and Vietnam to see the monuments erected in their honor in Washington, D.C.
Following communications, the treasurer's report was placed on file for audit and the by-law committee was informed it will be provided with the club template to be amended to fit the club's needs, per the suggestion of the international Lions Club. Officials noted a new pulled-pork vendor is needed and suggestions are welcome.
Cox announced she will be working with the Chester Lions Club to set up a date for eye screenings for New Manchester Elementary School students in the spring.
The Adopt-A-Highway event will take place at the end of April. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available, officials stated.
Cox said she will organize plans for Flag Day. This involves a program that is provided to the students at New Manchester Elementary School.
The New Cumberland Hall of Fame ceremony will be held Feb. 4. This year's inductees are the late Edwin Flowers, Chick Skinner and Hugh Tate.
