International Seniors Club celebrates Christmas

WEIRTON — The International Senior Club met Dec. 12 at Undo’s Restaurant in Weirton.

Vice President Tony LaRosa led the opening prayer. He then reminded members about the true meaning of Christmas.

Preceding a sit-down, holiday dinner, Larry Purks led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing “God Bless America.”

Following the meal, President Regina Truax welcomed those gathered for the final meeting of the year.

The club’s newest member, Robert DeFonzo, was among the 41 members in attendance. Seven guests accompanied members, including Albert Veltri, Annette Iannetti, Deanna Hvizdak, Denise Jones, Donna Kolanko, Paul Philips and Gail Philips.

Truax reminded everyone there will not be a meeting in January.

She conveyed there was a wide variety of toys that was collected for the Tri-State Young Marines Toys for Tots Program prior to Christmas.

Gabriel Arlia, along with those from the Young Marines, distributed the donations to area children in need.

Funseekers played a Christmas word game, with Norma Henson winning the prize.

Deanna Hvizdak and Liz Beecroft chose not to sing, but rather, read and explained, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The women explained the lyrics in a Christian way, making one look at the song in a different light.

“Happy Anniversary” and “Happy Birthday,” were sung to those celebrating an occasion in December. Get-well cards were sent to those by Barbara Purks. The joke of the day was read by Beecroft.

The following bus tours were announced: Rock and Roll Doo Wop 24, Capitol Theater, Wheeling, March 9; “Footloose, the Musical,” Lincoln Park Performing Art Center, Midland, Pa., May 5; Atlantic City, May 19-22; “Daniel,” Sight and Sound Theater, Lancaster, May 29-31; and the Ark Encounter in northern Kentucky, and the Creation Museum in Cincinnati, June 12-14. All tours are open to the public.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Henson. Undo’s gift certificates were won by Purks and Carol Wisienski. All members in attendance won a gift card, poinsettia or household item during the evening.

The next meeting will take place Feb. 13 at Undo’s.
