Meeting and officer installation, today

WEIRTON -- The Hancock County Democratic Women held their monthly meeting Nov. 14 at B4 Burgers, located on Pennsylvania Avenue.

President Teresa McCombs called the meeting to order, welcoming those in attendance and leading in the Pledge Of Allegiance. Silent attendance was taken.

Secretary Pam Allison was absent from the meeting. McCombs read Allison's minutes, which were submitted to her through email. The treasurer's report was read and will be filed for audit.

The Weirton Christmas parade, which took place Nov. 25, had been discussed by members, including the lineup. Past President Anna Gillespie used her truck and Alesia Brogdon arranged a utility trailer to be attached to the truck. Kathy Link, chair of the Hancock County executive committee, provided Democratic banners. The utility trailer was decorated with Christmas lights and blow-up characters donated by Gillespie. Candy bags with business cards were distributed to those at the parade. Alison Martin purchased candy and filled the bags, it was noted. Dina Carnes made a motion to approve a spending limit of $25 to $30 for the bags. Stephanie Valentine had seconded the motion, which carried. Those in the parade wore light-up necklaces and Santa hats, along with Democratic shirts or festive attire.

Gina Cross made arrangements for a Christmas get-together, which is scheduled to take place at the Garden Grill Steakhouse on Three Springs Drive. The gathering is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today. The price is $25 each, which will include the tip.

The menu was finalized by Cross and Link e-mailed everyone in the group with a proper invitation. In lieu of a gift exchange, club officials said to donate a monetary gift toward the Community Bread Basket in Weirton.

The installation of new officers will take place at the get-together. New officers include, Brogdon, president; Marianne Turkal, vice president; Link, secretary; and Carnes, treasurer. Gillespie will install the officers.

Brogdon made the motion to reserve two dates at T. Kosciuszko Hall for future events at $50 each. Carnes seconded the motion, which carried.

Brogdon was recognized as Hancock County Democrat of the Year during the annual Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner held in Charleston at the end of October. The dinner event pays tribute to "a remarkable woman in the community who embodies courage, compassion and dedication," officials said.
