Final farewell given at Memorial Wall
MINGO JUNCTION -- A solemn tribute and final farewell was given to Charles Greene, member of the Jefferson County Veterans Association. The service was held Friday at the Memorial Wall in Smithfield's Friendship Park. Members of local American Legions offered a last salute to their friend and comrade. Barry Bardone, adjutant of JCVA, related Greene was instrumental in the planning and construction of the wall and was its committee chairman. Greene coordinated the volunteer workforce with the purchasing and delivery of materials and worked with county engineers to meet standard requirements.
"It was right and proper he was honored at the place he held dear to his heart before being laid to rest," Bardone commented. A 21-gun salute and playing of taps closed the ceremony.
Chaplain Manuel Garcia of the American Legion Post 735, Piney Fork, presented a flag from a grateful nation to Greene's widow, Lorrie.
PERI meeting set
STEUBENVILLE -- A meeting of the Public Employees Retirement Inc., Jefferson County Chapter, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in the fiesta room of Froehlich's Classic Corner.
"Anne of Green Gables" coming
STEUBENVILLE -- The Guadalupe Theatre Company will perform "Anne of Green Gables" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at Catholic Central High School's Lanman Hall.
Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The family limit is $20. The show will be 100 percent family-friendly, according to organizers.
Community center schedules dinner
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The East Springfield Community Center will hold a dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the center, located on county Road 39 next to the firehouse.
The menu will consist of baked steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread, desert and a drink. The cost is $10. Carry out or dine-in will be available.
Everyone is welcomed to attend.
Steubenville retirees to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville City Schools retirees met for lunch at the Holy Trinity Greek Festival June 22. During the meeting, some of the retirees volunteered to help church members. Those in attendance thanked those who served and prepared the food. The retirees will hold their next luncheon Thursday at the Ville, located inside the Fort Steuben Mall.
Ye Olde Medieval Fest set Saturday
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Network will hold a Ye Olde Medieval Fest, featuring inflatable hobby horse jousting, at noon Saturday. The event will be held at 715 Gas Valley Road. Participants in the free event may try their hand at jousting and come away with their own steeds. Adults will have the opportunity to learn more about the services provided by the agency.
Trash and treasure sale slated
STEUBENVILLE -- Rosemont Chapel will hold a trash and treasure sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday. The church will offer a variety of new and gently-used miscellaneous and household items, sandwiches and baked goods will be available.
