Weirton Legion to host breakfast

WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Auxiliary will have an all-you-can-eat breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the post hall, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton.

Menu items will include sausage gravy over biscuits, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $8 per adult, $5 for those 6 through 10, and free for children 5 and under.

Breakfast is open to the public, and we invite you to support our veterans with us.

Memorial Service planned

PINEY FORK -- The Piney Fork Legion, Gwynn Allen Post 735, will hold a Memorial Day service to honor fallen servicemen and women through a program scheduled for noon, Sunday. The event takes place at the Legion grounds, but will be held at the Legion hall should there be inclement weather.

A luncheon will be provided at the hall following the service, with the food provided by Post 735 members.

Friendship Park Memorial Day service

SMITHFIELD -- The Jefferson County Veterans Association will present its annual Memorial Day program at 3 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Wall in Friendship Park, Smithfield.

Guest speaker will be Justin Neeper. An alumnus of Catholic Central High School and Marine Corps veteran, Neeper will speak on his tour of duty in the Middle East, including Iraq.

Those attending are asked to bring a chair and refreshments from Tim Hortons will be served. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the 4-H building.

Bake/rummage/book sales event set

WEIRTON--The Weirton Senior Center will hold a bake sale, rummage sale and big book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 1. The center is located at 3425 Main St.

Officials noted there will be a dance held at the center from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 1. Admission is $5 and includes hot dog and punch. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and Jack Thomas will provide the singing this month.

Mah Jongg offered at library

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library's new Mah Jongg group will be playing the game from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. each Friday.

No registration is required for the free group, which is open to Mah Jongg fans or those new to the game. Current players are welcome to bring their own tiles. For information, call (304) 737-1551

Art exhibit continues

WEIRTON -- The Top of West Virginia Arts Council is displaying the works of three area artists in an exhibit running through June 30 at the Summit Art Gallery.

Featured are the works by Dean Mossor of Steubenville, known for his oil paintings; Mallory Hout of Weirton, who works in pastels; and Bernard "Fritz" Hartman of Midland, Pa., who uses multiple artistic media.

Summer reading program to return

WELLSBURG -- Brooke County Libraries' all-ages summer reading program will return from June 5 through July 29.

Sponsored by an Elks National Foundation grant secured by Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553, the program will include a variety of free programs and activities and prizes for youth and adults.
