UNIONPORT -- The Wayne Township Community Center will hold a fundraising baked steak dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the center. The cost is $12 with proceeds to benefit the facility's upkeep.
Education through Market Day
MINGO JUNCTION -- Indian Creek Middle School students are learning various aspects of entrepreneurship and will put that knowledge to use as they take part in the district's Market Day activity, scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday in the school gymnasium. Around 125 fifth-graders will sell their wares and peddle items during the event, which is open to the community.
Social Studies teacher Jaime McCumbers said students have been learning about running a business and she now has a chance to put that knowledge to use at the miniature marketplace.
The students are entrepreneurs. They create products to sell which involves marketing, banking, economics and advertising while proceeds go to a local charity. Market Day has been held for five years but took a hiatus during the COVID pandemic. McCumbers said the students plan to sell candles to foodstuffs and it helps them understand what is involved in owning a business. "It's also a program where the students earn money and pay fees. They rent their desk and learn about finances," she added. The lesson began in mid-April and students earned a weekly salary in currency known as Econobucks to perform jobs, plus they learned about budgeting and making a profit. Parents and the community can turn real cash into the faux dough for their shopping spree on Market Day and students will man booths and sell pepperoni rolls, jewelry, Indian Creek merchandise, dog treats, keychains and candles, among other items. Past proceeds have been donated to Relay For Life and the Jefferson County Humane Society. "The students enjoy and learn a lot from the event," she commented. "It helps them understand what it is like to own a business and they learn about responsibility."
