First Christian Church Disciples Women meet

WEIRTON — The Disciples Women of Weirton First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) held a Mother’s Day meeting May 11 to honor their mothers. The theme was, “Her Children Rise Up and Call Her Blessed.”

All members brought a memory of their mothers, while some also brought an object which reminded them of their mother.

Officials said, “It was very heartwarming to hear the memories of the mothers and see the objects that brought back the memories such as handkerchiefs, button boxes, quilts, embroidered scarves, aprons and notebooks.”

President Janet Rymer welcomed guest Kim Weaver, director of the Weirton Christian Center.

Weaver was presented 41 gift cards from Rymer on behalf of the women’s group. The cards will be used as birthday gifts for students at the center.

Weaver explained children having a birthday during the month were given a party where they received a cupcake and $10 Wal-Mart gift cards. She expressed appreciation to the church for their donation.

Also during the meeting, Judy Cross played piano while Susie Beamer led the singing of, “M-O-T-H-E-R.”

Vice President Susan Brown led the ice breaker; Secretary Karen Blanc presented the announcements; and Treasurer Connie Norwood read a devotion on mothers.

Blanc said grace prior to the meal. The meal’s hostess was Carol Skerbetz.

It was announced the meeting concluded the first year of the newly-organized Disciples Women group at the First Christian Church, pastored by Mark Mayer.

Officials said the group meets four times a year and all women who want to give, “Eight Hours for Jesus” are welcome to attend.

Throughout this first year, the women donated clothing to Weirton Elementary School, made lap robes for shut-ins, collected money and personal hygiene items for West Virginia homeless shelters and donated gift cards to children at the Christian Center.

Attendees were, Rymer, Brown, Blanc, Skerbetz, Norwood, Cross, Lynda Slowikowski, Francine Hauldren, Beth Youcinak, Suzanne Kuhns, Susie Beamer, Lorrie Adkins, Pam Yelich, Wadeanne Nardo, Deena Klink, and Weaver.
