New Cumberland holding a contest
NEW CUMBERLAND -- It is time for New Cumberland residents to start spruceing up their homes and yards as spring has officially arrived and summer will soon be here. The city of New Cumberland plans to kick off the summer season with Memorial Day festivities May 29 that include a parade, food and fun activities.
To prepare in getting the town ready for the upcoming holiday, city officials and volunteers are sponsoring a yard decorating contest. Organizers say to let your house and yard star in a salute to the stars and stripes with a display of red, white and blue as the theme.
Residents can decorate their front door, porch, fence, etc. to show off their patriotism and American spirit. Entries will be judged on how well they celebrate patriotic spirit and cash prizes will be given for first, second and third place.
The contest is underway and will conclude May 29 when the winning house will be chosen. Additional details regarding the parade and activities will be announced later.
Sorority holds annual picnic/final meet
UNIONPORT -- Ohio Beta Alpha Teacher's Sorority held their annual picnic May 2 at the Unionport Recreation Center. The day consisted of a variety of picnic foods and was followed by the group's last sorority meeting until September, at a site still to be announced.
President Linda Lenzi welcomed members and presided over the business meeting, while Secretary Joyce Cammilletti called roll and read the approved minutes from the April meeting. Treasurer Teresa Nicholson presented her approved report, after which Scholarship Chairman Sharon Patterson exclaimed her committee has selected the recipient of the annual ADK scholarship. That winner's name will be released at a later date, according to officials.
Sue Davidson, ways and means chairman, discussed the group's upcoming mum sale, which will be held Sept.16 in conjunction with the Eastern Gateway Community College's garage sale. If members want to pre-order mums, they may send Davidson a check prior to Monday. The cost is $10 for a 9-inch pot; $14 for an 11-inch pot; and $18 for a hanging basket. Colors available are red, orange, yellow and purple, witha limited number of white.
Susan Nolan, past state president, presented the group with a, "Membership Award," which was given to the club at the State ADK Convention. Nolan read a memorial piece, which was also presented at the state convention, that honored deceased member Clara Joyce.
During the day's events, monies were collected and will be donated to the AIM Women's Center, the Sycamore Center and the Indian Creek and Toronto food pantries.
Hostesses for the meeting were Michele Fabbro, Paula DiOrio and Peggy Pyle.
Weir High Class of '67 to hold luncheon
WEIRTON -- The Weir High Class of 67 will hold a luncheon at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Route 22 Sports Bar, located at 307 Three Springs Drive, Weirton. All classmates and spouses are welcome.
Church to hold morning food pantry
STEUBENVILLE -- Grace's Cupboard Food Pantry will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Grace Lutheran Church, located at 2105 Sunset Blvd. For more information contact the pantry at (740) 282-9064.
Junk in the Trunk event slated
STEUBENVILLE -- A Junk in the Trunk event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 20 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, located at 284 Lovers Lane. There are plenty of vendor spaces still available to rent. The cost is $10 which covers parking and a space in which to bring your own table. Rental of two spaces is $15.
The event will be held outdoors behind the church.
Blood drive to be held in Weirton
WEIRTON -- May is Trauma Awareness Month and more blood donors are needed to ensure hospitals have enough supply on hand so they are ready to treat patients. A blood drive has been planned between noon and 6 p.m. May 22 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Fellowship Hall, 300 Three Springs Drive.
The need is critical for all blood types, especially type O, according to officials.
Registration for Indian Creek pupils
WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek Local School District will hold preschool and kindergarten registration and screening for those eligible to enroll for the first time as follows: Hills Elementary School, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 22-23; Cross Creek Elementary School, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 24-25.
Records of birth certificate, immunizations and evidence of Social Security number are required to register. An income verification document is required for those registering for preschool.
Children aged 3 through 5 on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to enroll. Pupils 4 years of age will receive priority placement in preschool classes. Students will not be secured placement until all necessary forms are completed and returned.

Parasite management workshop set
CADIZ -- Bargar Farm, located at 36505 Deerville Road, and Ohio State University Extension will host a small ruminant FAMACHA and integrated parasite management workshop June 2. Participants will get hands-on experience with parasite diagnostics and learn about parasite management in sheep and goats.
FAMACHA certification will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon and participants will spend the afternoon conducting parasite egg counts from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 per person and includes lunch. Landscape design registration open
CADIZ -- Join the Jefferson and Harrison Master Gardener volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon May 27 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds, located at 550 Grant St. in Cadiz, to learn about the basics of landscape design. The workshop will cover topics including choosing the right plant for the right place, design concepts and principles and steps in designing a landscape. Participants will have the opportunity to practice designing their own landscapes as part of the workshop.
Registration for the course is $15 per person. There is no cost for Master Gardener volunteers. The workshop will count toward one lab credit for the program.
