May 13 the date, Hopedale VFD the site for dinner-auction
HOPEDALE -- The 29th-annual Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park dinner-auction will be held May 13 at the Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department social hall, located at 103 Firehouse Lane in Hopedale.
Doors open at 4 p.m. with the dinner at 5 p.m. and the auction starting at approximately 7 p.m.
The speaker will be Sam Bennett Jr. of the Coshocton County Coal Miners Memorial
The auctioneer is Rick Keefer Auctions.
Tickets are $20 and include a buffet-style dinner, drinks and live and Chinese auctions. The dinner includes chicken, swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles, green beans, desert and drinks.

Bennett's family moved to Coshocton, Ohio, in September 1964 from Gary's Knob in Harlan County, Ky.
"My dad was working in the underground mines for around 16 to 18 years before moving to Ohio," he explained.
"We lived in a coal camp outside of Gary's Knob. The company name was V&C Coal owned and operated by Clyde V. Bennett, no relation. My dad worked at other mines prior to this like Consol Coal Co. Dad liked the idea of working at the Simco-Peabody Coal Co., and all the coal that came out went down to the Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co.'s Conesville Power Plant," he continued.
"My dad was accidentally killed in a haulage accident on May 5, 1971. After graduating high school in June, I started working at the mine on Nov. 9, 1976, until the mine closed in October 1978," Bennett explained.
"In November 1978, I got hired at North American Coal Co.'s Powhatan 6 Mine and worked there until getting laid off in February 1982. NACCO laid off 250 employees at that time," he added,
"Back in 2009 or 2010, I spoke to a man who suggested that I put a memorial stone at the mine where my dad was killed. Not until 2011 did I think about our conversation again. After speaking to the county commissioners, I had to talk to the judge to get permission to put the memorial stone on the courthouse lawn," Bennett noted.
"On Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, there was a community dedication service for the miners memorial stone," Bennett added.
Hancock Museum Commission kicks off lecture series May 21
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Museum Commission will begin the summer lecture series on May 21 at 2 p.m. at the museum featuring "Memories of the Grand Ole Opry" with Janet Keller leading the program.
The Rev. John Neiman will share stories and facts of the Holocaust during World War II through his association with Otto Frank and his wife. Frank was the father of Anne Frank, who wrote of her daily life in hiding in her personal diary.
That lecture series program will be held July 16.
Minutes of the previous meeting and financial reports were accepted at the commission's recent meeting where the summer lecture series was one topic.
Several gifts were received, logged and acknowledged with thanks. That included a West Virginia flag from Neiman; several pieces of Hall China from Bob and Donna Gray; and three framed newspaper pages of World War II historical events from George Shock.
The group agreed to participate in the New Cumberland Memorial Day parade on May 29 at 1 p.m.
Linda McNeil has presented a request for the museum to partner with the board of education in inviting school classes and children to share the history and lifestyles of the Victorian Age represented at the museum. Keller is developing plans.
The commission's next meeting is today at 2 p.m. at the museum. All are welcome to attend.
100 Women in Red observance Saturday at Mount Carmel
STEUBENVILLE -- The EmpowHER Women's Ministry of Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church, 708 N. Fifth St., will host its annual 100 Women in Red on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The guest speaker is Minister Tamara Knight from the Bright Side Baptist Church in Lancaster, Pa. All women of all ages are invited to attend. A love offering will be accepted, and refreshments will be served. The Rev. Benjamin Calvert is the senior pastor.
