EARNS FIRST PLACE — The Indian Creek High School Marching Band earned first place in the large group category during the Smoky Mountain Musical Festival Parade in Gatlinburg, Tenn., on Saturday. The event has attracted dozens of bands from across the country.

WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek High School Marching Band took a top prize during a musical appearance in Tennessee last weekend.
Band Director Donald Llewellyn said the band received first place in the large band group at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival Parade at Gatlinburg on Saturday.
About 88 members attended the event from April 12-16 and were among dozens of groups from around the country, including Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Florida.
Indian Creek performed a medley of Dolly Parton hits including "9 to 5" and "Why'd You Come in Here Looking Like That?" during the parade.
"Indian Creek took first place in the large group category of parade bands. There were two categories for large group and small group," Llewellyn said. "Both groups had multiple bands in their category. We have not won before, and the band is really excited. We knew the competition would be tough with bands coming from all over the country."
The music festival itself is a competition for elementary, middle and high school music groups, showcasing concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras, drumlines and more at the Gatlinburg Convention Center and concludes with an awards presentation. The event, which is now in its 30th year, has attracted musical groups from more than 29 states and Canada, but the ICHS band was not participating in the contests. Llewellyn said Indian Creek last attended the parade in 2012 before the competition was added. Groups were judged by officials from Purdue University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
