The Weirton Lions Club is once again honoring veterans and active service personnel with its Flags for Heroes program. The program is done with the assistance of the Weirton American Legion Post 10. American flags that are 3-by-5 feet will be displayed at the war memorial in front of the Weirton Wal-Mart on Memorial Day, July 4 and Veterans Day. First-time sponsors of flags (for $50) will have a flag tagged with their veteran or active service person's name, branch of service and any other pertinent information, with the Lions managing the display, including set-up, take-down and storage. Any sponsor from last year's display can reapply for a reduced sponsor rate of $30. Applications are available from any Weirton Lion, on the Lions website -- http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/weirton-wv/ -- or call President Gary Pitcock at (304) 797-8374. There are applications at the Weirton American Legion as well. Applications are accepted anytime during the year. At the end of the year, sponsors will receive their tag from the flag as a memento of their participation. "Please join us in honoring those who have given so much for our country," a club spokesperson commented. With some flags are club members, front, from left, Jim Courtney, Theresa Jenkins, Madona Smearman and Cindy Steiner; and back, Gary Pitcock; Bernice Pitcock Jim Petrelle and Linda Petrelle.
