Village of Bloomingdale

preparing for July 4 holiday

with two days of activities

BLOOMINGDALE — The village of Bloomingdale is looking forward to the upcoming Fourth of July holiday and making plans for it with a two-day celebration set for July 3 and 4, according to Mayor David Gaffney.

The schedule of events includes:

July 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m.: “Meet the New Kids on the Block;” flag-raising; national anthem sung by the Rev. Melody Essex; speaker Pastor Cody Gaston of Grace Pointe Community Church; a free weiner roast to which everyone is welcome; and the annual corn hole tournament that everyone is invited to play with cash prizes awards to the winners.

July 4 events begin with a breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Grace Pointe, located at 113 High St., Bloomingdale. Cost is by donation.

Other events include: Parade lineup at the top of county Road 39, beginning at 1 p.m.; the “Anything that Moves” parade starting at 1:30 p.m.; the Big Wheel race at 2:30 p.m. on High Street by the town hall with Big Wheels available; the plunger race, also on High Street by the town hall and beginning at 3:15 p.m.; a pet parade starting at the Post Office on High Street at 3:45 p.m.; Movin’ and Groovin’ inflatables and a dunk tank at 5 p.m.; and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Games in the evening will include a forsen T-shirt contest, egg toss and Jell-O eating. There will be a Chinese auction and 50-50 drawing. Food available will be pepperoni rolls, sausage sandwiches and baked goods (Unionport Order of Eastern Star) with hot dogs, nachos and cheese, pizza, taco in a bag, pop, water and fair concessions, too.

UMWA local to hold annual

dinner on July 17 in Hopedale

HOPEDALE — The United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1304 will hold its annual dinner on July 17 at the Hopedale Firehall.

“It was brought to our attention that some of the invitations that were mailed out had an incorrect date,” a spokesperson noted. “A second invitation has been sent out with the correct date of July 17, 2022. Sorry for any confusion.”

Folk music band performs

for Three Score Senior Club

WEIRTON — A meeting of Three Score Senior Club was held at Undo’s Restaurant on May 26 with Ed Powell, president, welcoming members and guests to the dinner meeting.

Bob Shirer led the group in prayer, while Powell led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Club members sang “God Bless America.”

Vice President Sandra Briggs, program chairman, introduced entertainers Faire May, a Wheeling-based, four-member, folk music band. The show was an international show featuring music from European countries, including Ireland.

Secretary Cindy Richards read the minutes from the April dinner meeting. George Pohlman gave the treasurer’s report.

Membership Chairman Brenda Edwards announced the club has 73 paid members.

Winnie Kemp reported reported on cards sent. May birthdays were acknowledged.

Kathy McCarrick, house chairman, decorated the tables in a patriotic theme for Memorial Day.

Reservations Chairman Vivian Weigel noted there were 48 members present and five guests. She read the menu that was selected for June.

Historian Lee Edwards reported that there are up-to-date albums on the tables in the back of the room. He also said that the newest pictures are included.

Under new business, Richards requested that all winners stand and give their name to keep the records accurate and to avoid missing any names.

Regina Truax announced that there would be a “night of comedy” at the old Polish Hall on June 3.

Dolores Ginier and Linda Walter won the 50/25/25 drawing.

In the free dinner drawing, Jim Hare and Lee Edwards drew the red tickets. Winners were Regina Truax, Lois Cox and Brenda Edwards.

Betty Virtue and Brenda Edwards drew the green tickets for the free dinner, won by Winnie Kemp and Marlene Runkel.

Winners of the Dairy Queen gift cards were Simone Edwards and Jane Watson.

SWARC planning Field Day

for Saturday in Richmond

STEUBENVILLE — The 2022 Steubenville-Weirton Amateur Radio Club Field Day will be held Saturday at the Steubenville Rifle and Pistol Club, located on 1284 State Park Mooretown Road in Richmond.

Club members will meet in the morning to erect antennas and begin set- up of radio stations. The Field Day radio operations will begin at 2 p.m. and continue through the day.

There will be a Get On The Air station set up for interested people to experience amateur radio operation at the direction of a licensed radio operator.

The purpose of Field Day is to combine public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills all in a single event, according to a spokesperson, who noted that it has been a national event since 1933 and remains the most popular amateur radio event.

The Steubenville-Weirton Amateur Radio Club serves Jefferson County in Ohio and Brooke and Hancock counties in West Virginia.
