Music guild wraps up 2021 events

STEUBENVILLE — Trio d’oiseaux from Xavier University — translated as “three birds” — entertained at the Ohio Valley Music Guild’s annual membership and brunch meeting Nov. 21 at the Steubenville Country Club, but actually it turned out to be a flock of four.

The group of talented musicians who performed a mix of chamber, classical and contemporary selections, featured Mollie Vonderhaar, the guild’s 2020 $1,000 scholarship recipient, on flute; Alex Budzynski on clarinet; Olivia Wakefield on piano; and Allison McGreal, also a flutist.

Vonderhaar is the daughter of Margaret Korode Vonderhaar and Steven Vonderhaar, both of Milford, Ohio, and the granddaughter of Helen Korode of Bloomingdale.

Guild President Ross Gallabrese extended a welcome and gratitude to those who continue to support the ongoing mission of the guild to provide quality, cultural entertainment and award scholarships.

A $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to college student sophomores and above who have a local connection and who have declared a music-related major.

The events the guild sponsors serve as fundraisers that help make those awards possible in addition to annually helping to support the Grand Theater Restoration Project. The guild has been a faithful and annual giver of $1,000 to that cause.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship from year to year is Nov 1. For information, visit www.ohiovalleymusicguild.com/scholarships or e-mail info@ohiovalleymusicguild.com.

Toni Dondzila and Matthew Gallabrese co-chaired the November event that included a brief membership meeting and election.

This marked the guild’s first membership meeting since November 2019, its absence a cause-and-effect result of COVID-19.

The guild was established in 2003 — a nonprofit organization committed to the support, enhancement and education of the community through the presentation of musical programming and through the granting of scholarships to college-level music majors from the Tri-State Area. Performances encompass many forms of creative expression, from opera and ballet to jazz and beyond.

Aside from Ross Gallabrese as president, Judi Gaynor is past president; Matthew Gallabrese is treasurer; and Toni Dondzila is secretary. Board members are Dottie Bossert, Carlotta Jordan, Liz Morelli, Iris Craig, Joyce Ryan-Orlando and Roxanne Matysiak.

New members and sponsorships are welcomed. Annual dues start at $20 per person with other membership levels available, including bronze, $50; silver, $100; and gold, $200.

Checks can be made payable to the Ohio Valley Music Guild and mailed to the guild at P.O. Box 2158, Wintersville OH 43953.
