Successful rose sale fundraiser for members of Steubenville Kiwanis Club

STEUBENVILLE -- The Sept. 28 meeting of the Steubenville Kiwanis Club marked an end to Ted Gorman's term as president and club member Paul Brandt's monthlong park-themed program presentations.

But the meeting also included the beginning of Melissa Greco's turn at leading the club and a report on what was a successful rose sale, the group's key fundraiser.

Tom Timmons, who sold the most long-stemmed boxed roses at 487 dozen, reported the club sold 1,022 dozen and thanked all those who helped sell and make local deliveries.

"It was a great success," Timmons said.

Gorman was thanked for his leadership of the club, and Greco was welcomed to her first term that begins today. The club meets at noon on Tuesday for a luncheon and business meeting at the Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St.

October's program chair is Kris Haught.

In the absence of the guest speaker for Sept. 28, Brandt gave an overview of Jefferson Lake State Park in Richmond.

Another September speaker, Flora VerStraten-Merrin, overviewed the improvements made at Beatty Park in Steubenville's South End as part of the Friends of Beatty Park volunteer initiative.

Brandt said he had visited there afterward and praised the work. "Wow -- what a job they have done," Brandt said.

Another park-themed program involved Brandt discussing Parks on the Air, which encourages "amateur-radio operators who enjoy the outdoors -- but who may not be interested in or able to take long hikes or make steep climbs -- to blend their interests by operating from municipal, county, state, provincial, and national parks around the world," according to its website.
