New library director Mike Gray

addresses Steubenville Rotary Club

STEUBENVILLE — Mike Gray, the new director of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, spoke to the Steubenville Rotary Club at a recent Friday meeting regarding his appointment as the 14th director of the local library system since its inception in 1899.

Gray was hired by the library board following a review process, assuming the position on Sept. 1 from Alan Hall, who then became the assistant director to complete the main library Americans with Disabillities Act project pending Hall’s retirement on March 31, 2019.

A native of Monaca, Pa., Gray has served as the assistant director of the library system since 2002. He attended Robert Morris University, receiving his master’s degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. He formerly was employed by the Beaver County Library System. Gray resides in Steubenville with his wife, Kim, and their five children.

Gray explained specifics about the Digital Shoebox Project, part of the library system’s local history and genealogy department. It has local history materials digitized and online for research. A recent upgrade of the software allows a new portion with photos, he said, noting the library has 2,000 local historic photos on file.

As an example, he pulled some 40 photos from the files that included many photos of downtown Steubenville and people who were part of local history. The photos included the Capitol, Paramount and Rex Theaters and other local buildings. A recent donation of photos was featured from the Peterson genealogical archives and the Nathan Stern archives.

The library system accepts local historical photos to add to the Digital Shoebox and can digitize photos and return the original photo to the donor to keep if desired.
