TORONTO — The owner of the Hues Studio, a new hair salon at 1338 N. Fourth St., wants her clientele to feel comfortable while they are in the chair and while they are waiting.

Stepping into the new business on the city’s north end, not far from the Fourth Street exit of state Route 7, members of the Toronto Coalition of Revitalization noted its resemblance to a small apartment, with cozy chairs and a smart television to watch while waiting to have one’s hair colored and styled by owner Ginny Kuhn.

As peaceful music wafted through the salon, Kuhn revealed she had been cutting and styling hair in Toronto, Steubenville and Wintersville for about 40 years when she decided to go into business for herself a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately, that decision coincided with the pandemic, forcing her and hairstylists throughout the state to close their doors for about two months while new health regulations were implemented.

But Kuhn said she used the time to pursue improvements to the building, which had been a hair salon years ago.

The entire first floor was repainted, adding to the various renovations completed by area contractors Ed Firm, Bob Stagani, Paul Romey and Jim Billham.

Kuhn said she’s thankful to their hard work in providing the location a top to bottom face-lift and to Lorna Flesher, a friend who donated the furniture.

She said she wants a visit to the Hues Studio to be a relaxing one and offers warm towels to provide clients a light scalp, shoulder, arm and hand massage while they are there.

“People come out of here and can’t believe how good they feel,” said Kuhn.

She hopes to add an automated massage chair to a separate room at the salon.

A 1982 graduate of Toronto High School, Kuhn received training through the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School. She has since served as a visiting judge at the school and welcomed its students to observe her at work.

Working alone for now, Kuhn encourages prospective customers to call her at (740) 317-1803 to arrange an appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

She noted she’s available on some evenings.

Joining Kuhn for a ribbon cutting held by the Toronto Coalition for Revitalization to welcome the new business were her sisters, Patti Davis, who makes decorative wreaths sold there, and Karen Shell.
