WVU Medicine welcomes surgeon, veteran to team

CADIZ — Dr. Harpreet Brar is bringing more than 36 years of surgical experience, including military and rural medicine experience, to WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital and WVU Medicine Harrison Community Hospital.

Brar specializes in:

• Removal of skin lesions and tumors;

• Colonoscopy;

• Upper (GI) endoscopy;

• Hernia repair;

• Appendectomy; and

• Cholecystectomy.

Brar grew up in Dallas and graduated from Baylor University with a degree in chemistry.

He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and began surgical training at Marshall University in Huntington.

In December 1987, he joined the Navy and became a naval flight surgeon. Following a six-month training course, including helicopter flight school, Brar was stationed with a Marine aviation squadron in Yuma, Ariz., for two years. He then returned to surgical residency training at a combined civilian/military program.

Brar completed a 20-year career in the Navy, including aircraft carrier assignments; overseas posting; deployments to Haiti, Fallujah and Iraq; and seven years as a surgical educator at the naval hospital in Portsmouth, Va.

In 2007, Brar joined a surgical practice in Ashland, where he worked for 10 years. Until recently, he had been working in Bellefontaine.

He and his wife, Lisa, relocated to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
