POLICE REPORTS
WEIRTON AND STEUBENVILLE POLICE
Road runner: A Weirton man is facing charges in two states after he was allegedly interrupted trying to break into a home in Steubenville Thursday before fleeing.
Authorities report David Bertoia, 32, 319 Patricia Ave., Weirton, was booked into the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville on charges of third offense driving under the influence, obstruction and possession of a controlled substance, and cited into Steubenville Municipal Court on a charge of failing to comply.
Steubenville police said a caller reported seeing Bertoia trying to break into a home on Pine Valley Drive and said when they arrived there, claim he ran two stop signs, was passing vehicles at speeds around 70 miles per hour on Lovers Lane and went the wrong way at the intersection of Fort Steuben and Mall drives, putting other drivers at risk.
Police allege Bertoia reached speeds in the 80 mph range after merging onto U.S. Route 22 East and at one point "merged in between a tractor-trailer and passenger vehicles ... almost causing a collision" on state Route 7.
Weirton police advised Bertoia made it to the downtown exit ramp, where he allegedly exited his car "and fled across U.S. 22 on foot," forcing motorists to take evasive action and causing two vehicles to collide.
Bertoia was taken into custody on Freedom Way near the Burger King, they said.
STEUBENVILLE POLICE
Ceasefire over: A woman who's had an amicable relationship with her ex reported being maced Wednesday after she went to his home to get a Christmas tree and found him in the bedroom with another woman. He confirmed the two of them "have an understanding where they can each enter the other's residence," but when she walked in and found him with another woman, the two women began arguing and the other woman maced her. The male said his ex "was antagonizing the other female and purposely entered his bedroom."
Getting along: A man arguing with his girlfriend over "relationship issues" Thursday said he tried to leave the residence but she "was blocking the doorway and 'bear hugging' him." She claimed she didn't know he was trying to leave. The male wanted her to leave the property, but police told him she would have to be properly evicted since her name is on the lease.
Piling on: A woman in the 4000 block of Stratford Boulevard said she was arguing with her male companion because the male is "constantly bringing items into the house" Wednesday. She said the items "are starting to pile up." The two of them told police there was no physical violence and while she was at work the male agreed to "remove some items to prevent further issues."
Motorist vs pedestrian: A hit-and-run was reported Thursday in the Mr. Fuel lot downtown. Police said the pedestrian refused medical treatment and advised she was walking toward the store when a red vehicle parked in a handicapped space back up, striking her left arm and hip before fleeing the area.
Accosted: An Franciscan University of Steubenville student said he was walking with a friend in the 1200 block of University Boulevard when someone in a black vehicle "passed them and the (rear) passenger was waving something silver in his hand" out the open window. The man said it could have been a gun or a cell phone, but reports one of the individuals in the car said, "I told you we would catch up with you." He said they had no idea who was in the car.
Cold: A man trying to enter vehicles in the 200 block of North Third Street Thursday told police he was "looking for a junk car to sleep in." The property owner said he wanted the man to leave and not return, which they relayed to the man.
Camera candids: A Wilkins Street resident said her upstairs neighbor was upset "due to her putting cameras up" outside their building Thursday. She said she had several videos of him "making loud noises upstairs to keep them awake." Police told her there wasn't anything they could do if he was in his own apartment when he made the noises.
Brazen: Kroger employees said a woman came in the store with a young child Thursday, loaded a shopping cart and left without paying for any of the items. They said when she was in the vestibule the cart locked up so she moved the merchandise into another cart and left in a dark colored vehicle. The stolen merchandise was valued at about $150, police said.
Code issues: Someone complained about mattresses and broken furniture Thursday in the alley behind a residence in the 1500 block of Ridge Avenue. A neighbor told police the items had been there since before the bulk pickup. The owner/occupants of the property were advised to remove the litter.
Served: Deanna Martin, 44, 527 Union Ave., Steubenville, booked into the county jail without bond on a warrant (Belmont County) for failure to appear, Thursday.
Cited: Charles E. Vance, 57, 527 Union Ave., Steubenville, driving under suspension and expired/unlawful plates; Luke R. Hayner, 22, Pinckney, Miss., speeding (school zone); and Virginia L. Elder, 54, 415 Maxwell Ave., Steubenville, failure to stop for a school bus.
