Police Beat

STEUBENVILLE POLICE

Woman injured, charges filed: A motorcyclist was taken into custody Sunday after he allegedly lost control of his bike and crashed in the 2600 block of Sunset Boulevard, injuring his female passenger. Police said Luke Hartman, 23, 111 George St., Mingo Junction, was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, reckless operation, fictitious plates and expired plates. A witness claimed they'd seen the woman exit the Midtown Speedway carrying beer. When they left the parking lot, Hartman allegedly accelerated quickly, causing him to lose control of his motorcycle and the woman "fell off and ... slid into the sidewalk," appearing to hit her head on the sidewalk. Police allege the male had a loaded gun in his possession despite having consumed some alcohol and claim he later told them without being questioned "that he only drank three beers and did not understand how his BAC was that high." Neither Hartman nor his passenger was wearing helmets. She was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment, police said.

Sleepy: Police were called to Mr. Fuel Sunday because an individual had been "asleep for hours at the pumps." Police said the woman at the wheel told them "she fell asleep ... due to being tired and the heat being on." They said there were no open containers in her car and she passed standard field tests. She told them she had a friend who'd let her "stay for a bit" so police parked her car in a parking space and then gave her a ride to her friend's house.

Freeloading: An employee at a city hotel told police Sunday a man has been "coming in every morning for two weeks and ate the breakfast they serve for hotel guests." The man has been told several times to leave "but he continues to come inside," they said. He'd already left and police said they couldn't find a man matching the description employees gave them.

Nicotine fix: A belligerent customer was reported at the downtown Speedway Sunday. Employees said the male had tried to purchase tobacco without an ID and when they refused, "he (tried) to ask other customers to purchase the tobacco for him." When they told him he couldn't do that "he started to argue with staff," they said. The male admitted he tried to buy tobacco but didn't have his ID and was told no. He denied asking anyone to buy it for him.

Money talk: A customer at the downtown Speedway was upset Sunday because employees couldn't guarantee his refund would appear on his debit card that same day. The man insisted on talking with the manager, who employees said was out of town and they weren't going to call because "she would say the same exact thing." Employees said the man began arguing, insisting he wanted to hear it from the store manager. Police told him the refund had been initiated but no one can promise him it would post to his account that same day.

No more warnings: Four juveniles were spotted in Pico Park after curfew Sunday. Police said one of the girls was turned over to her father along with a friend who was spending the night, and both were warned for the curfew violation. The other two had been warned twice before about being out after curfew, so police said their parent or guardian will be issued a summons.

Bench warmers: Two juveniles were spotted in the dugout at Murphy Park early Monday. The boy and girl were transported to their home and given a warning for violating curfew.

Much ado about nothing: A possible overdose was reported on Linden Avenue, but bystanders told police they thought the problem was he'd had too much TMC. Police said the individual was "awake and alert" and said he was fine. He declined treatment.

Bagged up: A Lawson Avenue resident said she left some of her personal items at a downtown location and the resident there had notified her she "had an hour to pick her stuff up or he would throw it away." She told police she doesn't have any way to get to the location, so police retrieved her bagged belongings from the South Fifth Street location for her.

Angry siblings: A North Sixth Avenue resident told police Sunday he's being harassed by a family member. He said the two of them had argued and afterward the family member "posted a picture of his birth certificate and Social Security card" on social media.

JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF

Ulterior motives: A Mingo Junction area resident said he was assaulted by his ex-girlfriend in a local bar July 11. He said she came in with one of her siblings and he tried to ignore them, but at one point the sibling came over to speak with him and things seemed to be cordial. His ex then came over and punched him in the chest. When he said he wanted to pursue charges, deputies asked him if that had anything to do with his ex finding her tires slashed overnight and listing him as a suspect.

Stranger danger: A Tiltonsville resident walking her dog told deputies July 12 that she saw a suspicious man and believed "he's up to no good." The resident reported returning home to find the gate open, trash cans moved and her glove box opened, deputies said.

Shattered: An Adena resident reported finding the rear window of her Honda broken July 12. Deputies reviewed camera footage and reported hearing "several BB shots" before it was broken. They attempted to speak with a neighbor but were unable to make contact with the property owner.

Assault reported: A juvenile in Mingo Junction reported being assaulted by a family member July 11. He told deputies he thought his nose and ribs had been broken. No further details are available.
