Domestic call leads to arrest: A city resident is facing multiple charges after allegedly backhanding his female companion Saturday when she told him to “shut up” during an argument, then allegedly choking her on a couch after she scratched his eye while trying to fend off the blow. Devonte Moses, 35, 321 Woodlawn Road, Apt. C4, was charged with domestic violence, resisting arrest and retaliation, police said.
Police reported hearing a man yelling at a woman when they arrived. Knowing Moses allegedly kept a gun in the residence, officers became concerned when he refused to come outside and instead tried to shut the door. Police said there had been a prior incident involving a gun being discharged in the residence, so an officer used a foot to keep the door from closing. When Moses again was told to step outside, police allege he retreated toward the couch, prompting officers to detain him. They later reported finding a 9 mm handgun on the sofa. The woman told police Moses was intoxicated and that she “had to fight to get (him) off her” so she could call 911.
Fraud claimed: A city resident told police Friday he was the victim of an internet and email scam, claiming he sent more than $100,000 to an individual or company that promised to return an even larger amount of money. He also said he wired $20,000 to someone in California working with the same group. Police said they briefly reviewed multiple transactions on the man’s bank statement.
Scam calls reported: A Dresden Avenue resident told police Saturday she received several suspicious calls from a man identifying himself as “Jamil.” She said the caller used an unknown number and left two voicemail messages saying only his name. When she answered one call, he asked if she knew a specific female Kroger employee. She said she told him she did not, and he claimed the employee had been arrested and he needed to speak with a judge to have her released. She hung up and later confirmed with the jail that the employee was not in custody.
Party house: A resident in the 400 block of Westwood Drive reported people screaming in a neighbor’s front yard Saturday. Police said the caller reported seeing about 10 juveniles yelling in the yard, but they had gone inside before officers arrived.
Weirton man charged: A Weirton man was taken into custody Friday after police allegedly found him driving a vehicle reported stolen in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Officers also reported finding a foil packet containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine in the driver’s door pocket. Chris Bowers, 50, 134 S. 13th St., Weirton, was charged with receiving stolen property and drug possession. Police said Bowers told them it “was a company vehicle and he just never returned it.”
Irritated: Someone reported what appeared to be a fight in the street in the 200 block of Murphy Avenue Friday. A resident told police there was no fight, explaining they were hosting a party with several juveniles. She said officers had responded earlier for the same complaint and, after they left, she yelled at the juveniles to stay out of the street. She believed the neighbor who called police may have mistaken her raised voice as the start of a fight.
Following along: A motorist who believed another driver was following him to his home in the 1700 block of Oregon Avenue Friday pulled into his driveway before deciding to follow the other vehicle instead. The second driver, a juvenile, told police he had made a wrong turn while driving to a store. The juvenile returned home, then later came back to the Oregon Avenue residence with his father to confront the man. The resident told police he has been followed home before and believed it was happening again.
Issues: Police responded Saturday to a report of a dispute between a mother and son after the son said his mother refused to get out of his vehicle. The son told officers he was trying to leave his residence, but his elderly mother would not exit the vehicle. He provided officers with information regarding her medical and mental health diagnoses, saying she “reacts like this often.”
The woman got out of the vehicle after police arrived, allowing her son to leave. She then told officers she was afraid to go inside the home, claiming they would “find her in a body bag” and alleging her son would kill her. Neighbors told police they had never seen the son threaten or assault his mother and confirmed he had repeatedly asked her to get out of the vehicle. She refused to return home and asked to be taken to other residences, but police said they could not leave her there without the homeowners’ permission. Officers ultimately had her transported to the hospital for evaluation after she told medical staff she had not been taking medication prescribed for her condition.
Entered: The owner of a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Welday Avenue told police Friday someone entered it overnight. She was unsure whether anything had been taken.
Summons issued: Darcy Flynn, 209 S. Third St., Steubenville, drunkenness/disorderly conduct, Sunday.
Code issues: A notice of violation was sent to the owner or occupants of 1506 Oregon Ave. for high grass and ripped garbage bags on the side of the property, along with several more bags on the back porch.
Cited: Conner D. Smith, 31, 4442 Harden’s Run Road, New Cumberland, speeding; Devin J. Jackson, 25, 606½ Daniels St., Toronto, failure to signal. Also cited was a juvenile clocked traveling 58 mph in a 35 mph zone.
