POLICE BEAT
STEUBENVILLE POLICE
Party night: A juvenile allegedly left Kroger Wednesday with two bottles of Smirnoff Ice and two Buzz Balls in his backpack, none of which had been paid for. The youth was located on Stanton Boulevard, but when police told him to put his hands behind his back, he allegedly said, "Hell, no" and attempted to flee. He was held in the Juvenile Detention Center on charges of misdemeanor theft, obstruction of official business and underage possession of alcohol.
Charge filed: A city resident was booked into the county jail after a fight was reported in the 600 block of Lawson Avenue Wednesday. Joseph Valentine, 25, 620 Lawson Ave., was charged with assault. When police arrived, Valentine allegedly told them he and the other man "both decided to fight one another" and admitted he hit the other man once "and then they stopped" and insisted neither of them would be filing charges. Police report Valentine kept walking up to the other man, who had a gash on his head, but the other man wanted nothing to do with him and repeatedly told him to "leave him alone." When he was able to speak to police privately, that man alleged Valentine paid him not to press charges, but he hadn't agreed to anything. He claimed Valentine asked him to come to the location to look at his garage, then "showed up and wanted to fight him over an incident that occurred several days earlier." He alleged Valentine "said 'do you want to fight' before tackling him and striking him several times in the head." He said he did want to pursue charges "because he believes there should be consequences for his actions and believed that if (police) leave" he would try to fight him again or his dad. Police said when they advised Valentine he was under arrest, Valentine told them he "only shoved (the other man) and (he) fell." He also said the other man "swung at him and he ducked," but police said Valentine was about five inches taller than the complainant.
Incident reported: A man in the 1300 block of Wellesley Avenue said he saw his father "being jumped by three males on the porch" Wednesday. He said he didn't know where his father had gone after the alleged assault.
Drugs suspected: An unresponsive male in a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of N. 7th Street Tuesday. Steubenville firefighters told police they revived the man with Narcan, but the male denied using drugs. Police said when they looked inside his vehicle there were no obvious signs of drug use, so he was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
Identity theft: A Lafayette Boulevard resident told police Tuesday someone was trying to buy a 75-inch television and an Xbox subscription using his information. He said he received an email confirming the purchase but he didn't make it or authorize it. He said the items were valued at $1,771.

JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF
Served: A caller reported seeing a woman who "appeared to be impaired by alcohol, staggering down the road and carrying a large machete." Police spoke with the woman, who said she was walking back from helping a friend with some brush, but she was taken into custody anyway after deputies learned there was a warrant for her arrest. Deputies said Mary Vandeborne, 42, of Smithfield, was booked into the county jail on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. They also reported finding a small bag containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine, but allege Vandeborne told them it belonged to her boyfriend.
Unnerved: A woman in the midst of a divorce told deputies she found a tracker on her vehicle June 19.
