Police Beat

Steubenville Police

Party of one: A man told police “people were being held against their will” in a residence Saturday in the 200 block of S. 4th Street. Police said he was “highly intoxicated” and pointed them to the rear of a vacant residence, but when they looked inside they “did not hear anyone yelling for help nor did (they) find any open doors.”

High school stuff: A man in the 1300 block of Park Street reported a disturbance Saturday. Police said when they tried to talk with him “the female involved started to yell over him,” so they advised her to go inside the house and they would speak with her next. She stomped inside with children in tow and shut the door, telling police “No one is coming inside her house and … she will not speak with them.” The male told police the female had “kicked him out earlier in the day and he was trying to leave …” but she tried to follow him “and brought the kids outside so they would cry and keep him from leaving.” He asked police to stay “so he could leave while the kids were inside.”

Not her first rodeo: A N. 6th Street resident flagged police down Friday to report he had allowed a woman to use his bathroom. When he went to use it himself, he said he heard “what appeared to be (her) leaving rapidly.” He said he checked the drawer where he keeps his wallet and discovered it had been rifled through and $40 was missing.

Family squabble: A father and son in the 600 block of Lawson Avenue were arguing Saturday, with the father saying he wanted his son to move out. He said it began when his girlfriend was in the kitchen making food and his son “walked into the room and began berating her.” He claimed his son told him, “You better not call the cops and … if the cops showed up he would be able to talk his way out of (it).” The father said he wants his son out of the house, but when he told police his son had lived there for four years, they advised him he would have to evict him. They also said he could obtain a protection order if necessary.

Brain trust: A man who parked a U-Haul he had rented in the 400 block of Lincoln Boulevard at 6 a.m. Thursday and left the keys on the dash returned 33 hours later and discovered it had been stolen.

Drugs: An unresponsive male was reported on the ground Friday in the 300 block of North Street. Police said when they arrived he “stood up and was seemingly unaware of his surroundings” for a moment, after which he was “unsteady and … nearly fell over several times.” He was told to remain seated and told firefighters he had two unused hypodermic needles in his pocket, which they confiscated. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Unplugged: A S. 6th Street resident who asked a juvenile using an outlet outside her home to charge his phone to leave said he complied, but reported “other juveniles in the area began throwing a football at her doors.” Police saw no damage, and the woman could not identify those involved, but officers spoke with the juveniles and advised them to stay away.

Wrong way: A driver allegedly seen traveling the wrong way on a one-way street Saturday was charged with impaired driving. Police said Donald Henderson Jr. was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and cited for a one-way violation. Officers reported they could “smell a strong odor of alcohol” and said he was slurring his speech and unsteady on his feet.

Cited: Joshua Wagner, 41, 1204 Arlington Ave., Steubenville, improper backing. Wagner told police he “did not see (the other car) behind him” when he backed up due to a traffic issue in the 1300 block of Oregon Avenue.

Paying it forward: A city resident drank a soda at a downtown Speedway on Friday, but his card was declined at the register. He told police he “did not have any money to pay for the $1 drink.” Another customer paid for it.

Keyed up: A N. 4th Street resident said Saturday he and his brother argued over keys, and before leaving, his brother “(hit) him in the back of the head and left the residence.” He said his brother is homeless and he did not want to pursue charges.

Served: Joshua Chociej, 31, 524 Forestview Dr., Wintersville, bench warrant (Belmont County), Saturday. He also was cited for expired registration.

Outdoor fun: A caller reported hearing a female yelling Saturday near Sunset Boulevard and McDowell Avenue. Police said there were “multiple adults and children” in the area “yelling and playing,” but no one appeared to be in distress.

Walk-in welcomed: A city resident who went to the police station Friday to discuss a prior report was taken into custody after officers discovered an outstanding warrant. M. Burkett, 51, 2338 Chestnut St., Apt. 3, was held without bond on a charge of illegal conveyance into a detention facility.

Damage reported: A property owner told police Friday her retaining wall was damaged during a recent rollover crash. She said the vehicle “landed in her driveway” and that during rescue efforts the wall was struck. She reported “two large bricks were crooked” and said the wall is now leaning more than before.

Code issues: A code violation notice was issued to the owner or occupant of 1326 Oak Grove Ave. for junk and litter piled under steps.
