Steubenville Police

Pooh pile: A Wilkins Street resident was concerned because her neighbor sprinkled mothballs on his lawn and didn’t understand why he’d done it, though police immediately spotted a “vast amount of (dog) feces” in the area and weren’t surprised when she told them that’s where she lets her dog do his business, Sunday. Police said the pooch’s pooh was “on the street, sidewalk and adjacent property” and told her it’s likely why the neighbor had resorted to mothballs, which can be toxic to pets, for odor control. Police told her they would speak with the neighbor ,but in the meantime, she should get herself “a large shovel” and dig in since pet owners can be cited for excessive dog feces. The neighbor confirmed their suspicions, telling police he rounded the corner a few days ago and saw the mess and smelled a “foul” odor so he bought the moth balls “in an effort to return his curb appeal.” He said he didn’t realize mothballs can toxic and he “won’t use them again,” but police told him if the dog owner doesn’t get his mess cleaned up to call.

Innovative: A man poked around in the trash at Wal-Mart and found several receipts, Monday. Employees said he then went shopping, picking out items that matched up to the receipts he’d fished out. He left the store without paying for the items, valued at just over $101, police said.

Dog walker: Someone reported a disturbance in the 1600 block of Ridge Avenue, Sunday. Police were told a woman had been “yelling on the sidewalk.” They found a woman standing in front of the house in question but report “nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary” and “insisted that she was simply walking her dog.”

Starting young: Some kids reported members of another “group down the street” were harassing them and “yelling profanities at them” in the 100 block of McDowell Avenue, Saturday. Police told them to stay away from the other kids, then went to the home of those other kids to speak with their mother, who said she’d “heard her children yelling profanities” and they would be staying indoors the rest of the night.

Dumped: An employee at mid-town Speedway reported a suspicious box by the dumpster, Friday. When they arrived he told police he’d checked the box and discovered two cats inside it. He was told if he didn’t want to rehome them he should call the Jefferson County Humane Society.

Conflicted: Two people in the 800 block of North Sixth Street each claimed the other had assaulted them, Friday. The female involved said she’d been “shoved to the ground” by her male companion, but he said he only did it because she “struck him multiple times in the face (so) he placed her in the snow so she would stop hitting him.” Neither of them had visible injuries. Police said the woman told them from the start she wanted to pursue charges, while the male initially said no but then changed his mind when he found out she was proceeding. Due to their conflicting accounts, police said the information would be forwarded to detectives and they should stay away from each other.

Long way home: A Belmont County woman was taken into custody on State Street at Maxwell Avenue when she was allegedly found at the wheel of a car her boyfriend in Texas had reported as stolen after he let her take it to work and she never brought it back or contacted him, Saturday. Police said Micah A. French, 32, of Bellaire was booked into the Jefferson County jail without bond on charges of receiving stolen property as well as being a fugitive from justice (Texas.) She said she told her boyfriend she was driving the car to work “and instead drove to Ohio” for what she described as a “family emergency,” police alleged. She admitted she didn’t ask permission to take the car to Ohio but police said she told them she’d “planned to eventually tell him,” though she “had not been in contact with him for a few days.” Police reported finding a snort straw with a powder residue on French’s purse and charged her with possession of drug paraphernalia as well as driving under suspension.

Don’t drive: Someone reported seeing an “intoxicated elderly female” in the Hollywood Plaza parking lot, Friday. Police said as they arrived they saw a man “attempting to help (her) get into (an Acura),” but report the keys she had were to a Honda, and when they asked her if the Acura belonged to her she said she “did not know where her car was.” The woman was unsteady and “was not making much sense” but told police she doesn’t have any medical issues, and when they asked her for an ID “kept giving (them) a debit card,” so they contacted a family member to come pick her up.

Sticking point: An unoccupied black Chevy Malibu was found in a ditch on the John Scott connecter, Friday. Police said it appeared “to be stuck in the snow” and said when they tracked the registered owner down in Weirton, she said she lost control of the car.

Shortchanged: A resident in the 200 block of North Street reported some money had been stolen around 4 a.m., Friday. The resident did not want to pursue charges at this time.

Double-dipping: Police were told a shoplifter grabbed a bookbag off a Wal-Mart display Feb. 9 and proceeded to fill it with merchandise, including “a large boom box,” and didn’t pay for any of it, then apparently came back a second time and snatched another boom box, Friday. Total value of the stolen merchandise was $442.

Charged: Dawn Hanlin, 57, 311 N. Seventh St., Steubenville, criminal trespass, Friday. Kroger employees spotted her in the store and told police she had been banned for life. Police said when they questioned her, Hanlin told them “she forgot about it” and had gone to the store to purchase chocolate for Valentines Day.

Argument: A caller reported people inside a residence in the 1300 block of Oregon Avenue “arguing and screaming,” Friday. Police spoke to a woman there who told them “her boyfriend and mother were in a verbal argument but they (had) since left the residence,” but nothing else occurred.”

Served: Janine L. Fontaine, no age listed, 225 Cerise Lane, Wheeling, bench warrant, Friday; Michael Bertine, 42, 114 Benita Drive, Mingo Junction, warrant (drug paraphernalia), Friday; Robert Love, 54, 709 Pine St., Steubenville, warrant for failure to appear, Friday;

Cited: Isabelle Ebertz, no age or address listed, blocking a driveway. Police said a resident in the 2000 block of Oregon Avenue reported a car was parked in front of their driveway. The resident said they’d already knocked on doors but were unable to locate the owner of the vehicle. The owner showed up after a tow truck driver was on scene and the vehicle was in the process of being impounded, they said. Ebertz spoke to the driver, who released the vehicle after she paid him and she “then moved and legally parked the vehicle;” Kenneth Davis 39, 70 state Route 151, expired registration; Brittany Wilke, 913 Sherman Ave., Steubenville, expired license plate; Jaden Tennant, 23, 125 Lovers Lane, Steubenville, expired plates; and William Hopkins, 26, Columbus, no operator’s license; the owner of a vehicle blocking bus access to the 1200 block of Oak Grove Avenue and blocking a fire hydrant.
