Police reports

Steubenville Police

Stupid is as stupid does: An Empire resident traveling with his girlfriend and child on John Scott Highway at Sunset Boulevard told police a man in a white Toyota Tundra was tailgating him so he “slammed on his breaks and the truck nearly struck him,” Monday. He said both vehicles continued up the hill and he let the truck pass him, but then the tailgater pulled to the side of the road so he would have to go past and once they made it to the light he claims the Tundra driver “rolled down his window and pulled out a handgun.” He said he “heard the handgun being loaded and (he) looked over and the gun was pointed at him” but the light turned green and “both vehicles sped through” and said continued on their way without further incident. He described the Tundra driver as a white male in his mid-20s “with facial hair and a low-cut hairstyle.”

Suspicious bulge: A man fled Wal-Mart with “a large amount of merchandise concealed under his clothing,” Monday. Employees said they confronted him and as he ran away “a bottle of alcohol (fell) out” of one of his pockets. Police said the security footage showed “a few bulky items protruding from under his sweatshirt and sweat pants” and said a pocket in his sweatshirt “appeared to be weighed down by a heavy object.”

Headed to trouble: Two people were arguing in the 1400 block of West Adams Street, Tuesday. The pair advised they were “arguing over cell phones and infidelity.” Each of them had the other’s cell phone and wanted police to get theirs back for them but were told it’s a civil issue and there was nothing law enforcement could do. Neither of them was willing to leave the property to de-escalate the situation, police said.

Shadow boxing: A man in the 800 block of Buena Vista Boulevard told police he was attacked while walking in the area, Wednesday. Police spoke with him as well as his girlfriend, who said he’d been drinking and woke up in the middle of the night. When he got out of bed she said he “accidentally kicked something with his foot, which caused a laceration,” but in his current mental state “he did not comprehend what had happened and contacted 9-1-1. They said all appeared to be in order “except for his intoxicated state.” Steubenville firefighters treated him at the scene.

Extreme reaction: A Tampa, Fla., business told police a Steubenville resident has been harassing his company, Tuesday. He said the man had spoken with several of his operators, “upset with their services” and “made threatening comments to one” of them. He provided police with records of several calls in which the man told the operator, “You realize if you were in front of me right now I’d grab you by the neck and choke you to death” and, “If any veteran talks to you they better want to kill you just like I do” and, “If you were in front of me right now I would kill you dead.” The Steubenville caller also told the operator “his job ‘sucks’ and (encouraged) him to find a new job.” The business owner only wanted the Steubenville man to be warned to cease all contact with them, which police did. They said he told them he “would not be calling” the Tampa business again.

Angry young man: Witnesses reported a “young male” threatened customers and refused to leave Maryland Market, Monday. They said he’d been asking people to purchase items for him and after he was told to leave, a customer reported hearing him say he “was going to physically harm the employees.”

Out there: A man in the 400 block of Spring Avenue complained that $3,500 had been stolen from his cousin’s room, Wednesday. He claimed a cousin had called a female and told her to steal the money, then called him and told him to stop her from taking it.

Alcohol fueled: A North Commercial Alley resident who “appeared to have been drinking” claimed her son and his girlfriend were removing items from her garage, but she couldn’t tell police what items they’d taken, Wednesday. Police explained to her what she’d have to do to evict them.

Copper lover: Police were told sometime in the last two weeks someone entered the basement of a property in the 600 block of Grandview Avenue and stole copper pipes, Tuesday.

Got noticed: Police spotted a man walking in the 1100 block of Claire Avenue with two backpacks and a mask covering his face, Monday. Minutes later he was spotted walking toward Grandview Avenue, then when they circled back again, he was standing in a yard in the 1000 block of Claire Avenue where he walked behind a residence. As they approached the residence on foot, police said they heard a couple through their door camera stating “they live at the residence and … they don’t know who the individual was who was walking around (their) yard.” They said when they yelled at him, the man “walked back up the roadway.” Police said they followed his footprints in the snow and found him in the back yard of a neighboring residence, “arguing with the female” living there. Wade Mannis, 32, 709 Grant St., Toronto, ended up being booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $250 bond on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

Thin ice: Police were notified someone was walking on the ice in the Ohio River, Monday. Police checked the area between Washington Street and the marina but couldn’t find anyone. Brooke County officials then notified police that they saw someone on the ice near the shoreline by the Market Street Bridge.

Picked himself up: Someone reported seeing a man “laying in the road” in the 700 block of Market Street, Monday. Police checked the area but were unable to locate the man.

Drunk and disorderly: A disturbance was reported in the 1500 block of Oregon Avenue, Tuesday. Police said the caller told them a “family member had been at the residence drinking and a verbal altercation had ensued,” but the individual had already left the area so their help was no longer needed.

Booked: Isabella M. Shust, 22, 101 Starkey Blvd., Wintersville, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, Tuesday. Police said they searched a purse containing “numerous cards” bearing Shust’s name and allegedly found a “zipped up pocket” with a small bag containing a bag and small vial containing a white powder-like substance as well as a cut straw with residue, though she “denied any knowledge” of its contents.
