Steubenville Police

Tearing up: A woman in the 100 block of North Fourth Street told police her ex pepper-sprayed her, Tuesday. She said she bumped into her ex in the alley next to the womens’ shelter and the woman’s eyes weren’t red but they were watering and she said she was interested in pursuing charges. Police advised her they’d forward the information to the prosecutor and report they were unable to locate her ex.

Bad idea: Police were asked to check on the welfare of a city resident, Tuesday. When they spoke with her, she said she was “having issues with her ex-boyfriend who resides with her.” She said the ex “gets violent when he drinks” so she left her home to avoid problems. She said she hadn’t received any threatening messages that day, so they advised her to stay with a friend and seek a protection order.

Hanging on: A man said he and his girlfriend are being harassed by his ex, Tuesday. He said the harassment is continuous and she “has gone to the extent of calling his mother to try and talk to (him).”

Charged: Employees at Wal-Mart claimed they watched a woman scan an item, then bagged multiple items, Tuesday. Police said Joni L Hython, 42, 411 Henry Ave., Steubenville, was charged with theft. Five items that hadn’t been paid for were allegedly found in Hython’s purse, police said.

Stubborn: A Cleveland Avenue resident said she wanted her husband get treatment for a health issue but he “got argumentative with her” and refused, Tuesday. Police said when they spoke with him, the male “advised that he was OK and would treat (himself)” and would contact EMS (himself) if he needed them later.”

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to the owners/occupants of properties at 1657 Ridge Ave., sofa set piled on front porch; and 1339 Ridge Ave. recliner on front porch scrap metal, tires and appliances in the back yard.

Complaint: Someone complained that a moving container was on the street in the 1900 block of Oregon Avenue, Tuesday. Police said the container was in front of a property but “was not blocking the street or any driveway.” A neighbor said the container had been dropped off a couple of hours earlier.

Cited: Gary W. Vale, 72, Deersville, failure to yield after two vehicle collision at Etta and Rosemont avenues; Rodney A. Lemley, 45, 1116 Hillary Square, Steubenville, speeding (school zone) and expired registration; Kylie R. McFarland, 23, 307 Sinclair Ave., Yorkville, speeding; A vehicle with expired plates and flat tires that was parked in the 500 block of North Fifth Street towed and citation put on file.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Threats: Deputies were told church elders in Smithfield were being threatened by a man, Saturday. The messages included the name of the alleged sender, but when deputies spoke with the man, he denied involvement and showed them his phone. Deputies said the number to that phone was different from the number from which the threats were made.

Disturbing: A caller said a man living in an abandoned property in Rayland was parked at a family member’s home, “blaring the horn and blasting music and screaming,” Saturday. After speaking with him deputies said the man returned to his property.

Booked: Robert Tanley, 45, Bergholz, probation violation (Columbiana County court) and a warrant (Wintersville county court, Friday. A caller claimed a man at an Amsterdam location was “wigging out” and had warrants outstanding. Deputies allege that Tanley ignored requests that he come to the door, so they had to force entry to his location.

Suspicious minds: A caller reported a man wearing “a white tank and boxers” as well as a toboggan walked out of an apartment complex and headed up the hill, Sunday. The caller didn’t recognize him as living in the complex. Deputies checked the area but didn’t find him.
