Police reports

Steubenville Police

Out of hand: A caller reported a female hitting her boyfriend in the 900 block of North Sixth Street, Monday. The victim said they were “watching TV and got into an argument” and she “hit him in the left eye,” Monday. Police said the man’s left eye was red, swollen and bruised but he “did not know what she hit him with because she hit him out of nowhere.” He wasn’t sure he wanted to file charges, but police pointed out “the injury to his eye appeared to be very noticeable.” The female told police they were about to go to bed “when (he) grabbed her and ripped her necklaces off her neck,” but she had no markings or signs of injury. They said she also told them she “threw a shoe at (him) and missed, so she smacked him in the face with an open hand” but police said it was apparent the man’s injuries “were not caused by an open-hand slap.” When they tried to speak with both parties about a solution for the night, they said the victim “decided he did want to pursue charges.” Jasmine Creech, 27, 928 N. Sixth Ave., was booked into the county jail without bond on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, police said.

Diverging paths: Someone reported a couple arguing in the parking lot in the 700 block of North Seventh Street, Monday. Police found the two of them and said the woman told them she “wanted (her male companion) to go with her to an arcade” but he refused. He said he wanted to leave the area, but didn’t want her going with him. Police told her they couldn’t force him to go with her, but the staff in her apartment complex told police they wanted him to “leave the property and not come back” because of the disturbance.

Pipe down: A bystander reported a couple “yelling at each other” in an apartment in the 800 block of Market Street, Tuesday. Police said they could hear them arguing from the hallway but when they knocked, the parties “went silent and … refused to open the door” nor would they answer calls from the police dispatcher.

Grab’n go: Employees at Wal-Mart told police a man took a bookbag into the fitting rooms and when they confronted him he ditched it and “grabbed two additional items of clothing and left,” Saturday. Police said there were an Apple air tag, some laundry and other “miscellaneous” items in the bag.

Stolen: A woman said she’d parked her vehicle in a lot adjacent to Vacarro Field the Franciscan University campus Dec. 12 and returned nearly a month later to find it was gone, Monday.

Summons issued: Employees at Wal-Mart allege a woman was price switching (scanning a more expensive item with a price tag for a less expensive one) and bagging items that hadn’t been scanned before trying to leave the store, Saturday. Police said Kimberly Evans, 60, 205 Beech Road, Weirton, was charged with petit theft.

No grounds: Someone complained about a trailer parked in the street in the 1100 block of Ride Avenue, Monday. Police looked into it and said the trailer belonged to a construction company that had crews working at the location and their “tools set up inside and outside the trailer.” Due to the trailer being loaded and unloaded, police said there was no violation of the city code.

Served: Employees at Wal-Mart claimed a man was seen holding two items in his hand at the self-checkout but only scanning the one in front, Monday. They also allege the man “had other items hidden in his coat pocket and … walked out of the store and placed them in his vehicle, then walked back into the store and continued shopping before skip-scanning the rest of the items.” Benjamin Hill, 31, 564 Cadiz Road, was charged with theft and served with a second theft warrant stemming from a Dec. 30 incident, police said.

Booked: Azar Barrington, 35, 180 N. Fourth St., Apt. 303, Steubenville, violating a protection order, Sunday. Police investigating third-party allegations of an assault said Barrington and his girlfriend told them he’s preparing to move out of state. Both denied having had a physical confrontation, and she had no bruises or markings to suggest otherwise, but the girlfriend admitted he had been staying at her place “because his apartment had black mold in it.” Police said there’s a court order barring him from any contact with the woman.

Summons issued: Tremont Dawson, 23, 1616 Moreland Drive, Steubenville, theft, Sunday. Kroger employees claimed Dawson left the store with a 12-pack of pop he hadn’t paid for. When police stopped him, Dawson allegedly “admitted to the theft and advised he had several other items in his backpack” that he hadn’t paid for, police said.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Never pay them: A Reichart Avenue (Steubenville) resident didn’t buy into a scammer’s claim that he had “charges pending” in county court and would be arrested if he didn’t pay$1,500, Monday. The resident said the would-be scammer told him he’d be arrested if he didn’t pay, but instead the man contacted Wintersville county court as well as Jefferson County Common Pleas Court staff to confirm there were no charges pending before reporting the incident to the sheriff’s department. Deputies told him “no one should give out personal information or banking information” to an unknown caller, even if they purport to be in law enforcement, and, “If deputies have any (warrants) they would be hand-delivered by a deputy.”

Getting crowded: An Amsterdam resident told deputies several people were “looking in her windows” and had started “spraying a substance in her house,” Monday. Deputies checked the property and reported no one was on or near her porch. She said she didn’t need medical attention and denied using any mind-altering substances, they said.

Welfare check: Deputies were asked to check on an Amsterdam man who’d been sick for two days, Jan. 13. The 19-year-0ld said he’d actually been sick for a year because of “vaping and smoking marijuana” and had already gone to the doctor several times but that night he was having “breathing issues.” Deputies called for an ambulance to transport him to the hospital.
