Steubenville Police

Business struck: A vehicle drifted into the Taco Bell storefront, damaging the northeast corner of the building, Sunday. The motorist told police she pulled into a parking space and went inside to use the restroom and “must have left her vehicle in gear” and it drifted backward into the front of the building.

Drink it off: A couple in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue was arguing, Saturday. The male told police he wanted his girlfriend to “go home and go to sleep due to (her) being intoxicated,” which police said was “apparent,” Saturday. The male said he would eave for the night and the woman was told she needed to go home.

Couldn’t get up: A man requested a welfare check on his mother after he was unable to speak with her for about five days, Thursday. He said she has several health issues, and he couldn’t use his key to get in because the screen door was locked. Police knocked on the door several times with no response, so police forced the screen door open so he could use his key. Police said they “could hear a faint response … from the back of the house” and said she told them she had not been able to get out of bed for several days.

Detained: A Pittsburgh man was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on an intoxication hold after he allegedly refused to identify himself to police, Monday. Police allege Shaquille Wilson, 31, was a passenger in a vehicle they’d stopped so they could warn the driver he didn’t have his taillights on, but said the driver and Wilson became argumentative. They claim Wilson smelled of alcohol and would not tell them his name even after they informed him that he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, which was required, and said he refused to get out of the van, then pulled away when they opened the door to get him out. Police said they charged Wilson with obstructing official business.

Roofers: Someone reported seeing “juveniles out on a roof” in the 600 block of North Fourth Street, Saturday. Police said they checked the area, but they didn’t see any kids misbehaving.

Spat reported: A caller reported seeing an elderly male and female arguing in the roadway, but police didn’t find them or anyone causing a disturbance, Friday.

Hit-skipped: A driver said he was sleeping in his truck when he heard a loud bang, and when he exited his truck found a man “looking at the damage,” Friday. The man fled, but the sleeping driver managed to get a picture, police said.

Loaded up: A man filled a cart at Lowe’s up with merchandise he hadn’t paid for and then fled in a red Dodge Ram truck, Friday Police said the man was captured on store security loading the cart with merchandise, including Kobolt and Bosch tools. The stolen merchandise goods were valued at nearly $990, police said.

Couldn’t take it: A female who wheeled nearly $528 in merchandise out of Wal-Mart that she hadn’t paid for ended up leaving it behind when an employee confronted her in the parking lot, Saturday.

Entry attempted: A resident in the 600 block of North Fifth Street told police someone tried to kick his front door in while he was away from home, Sunday. Police said the dead bolt was damaged.

Charged: A Toronto resident was booked into the county jail after an alleged shoplifting incident reported at Wal-Mart, Sunday. Police said Jessica Ash, 40, 425 N. Fifth St., Toronto, was charged with theft and criminal trespass after a traffic stop on Lincoln Avenue at Lincoln Boulevard. Several items believed to have been stolen were recovered in the vehicle, police said. The driver Christine Pinnell, 55, 180 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, was cited for driving under suspension. A male passenger who said he was “not involved in the shoplifting incident and did not have any knowledge it occurred” was released from the scene.

Ran away: A resident in the 500 block of Highland Avenue reported a burglary but said the male involved fled on foot toward North Seventh Street, Sunday.

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to owners/occupants of properties at 637 Grandview Ave., 328 Cedar Ave., 328 Cedar Ave, 540 Cedar Ave., 1816 Mary St., 1822 Mary St., 633 Oakmont Ave., 634 Oakmont Ave., 638 Oakmont Ave., 732 Oakmont Ave., 801 Oakmont Ave., 832 Oakmont Ave., 2510 Sunset Blvd., 1517 Oregon Ave., all for high weeds/grass. Also, 610 Pine St., litter and junk, including a couch, recliner and broken chair, piled in front yard; 616 Pine St., garbage bags and a large cardboard box piled in front of property; 1810 Mary St., mattress in front yard; 430 Lawson Ave., junk and litter scattered in front yard, junk on front porch and garbage bag on the side of residence.

Cited: Nicholas M. Mason, 29, 136 Wilson Ave., Steubenville, failure to stop for a school bus; David M. Guza, 65, 350 Belleview Blvd., speeding; Devin Juliana, 48, 541 Lincoln Blvd., Steubenville, expired plates.

Unpleasant visitor: A woman living on state Route 213 near Toronto said a man pulled into her driveway and started yelling at her and after she yelled back, slammed her head into the trunk,” Sunday.

Multiple calls: Amsterdam residents reported someone on a motorcycle “driving down Main Street, doing wheelies” at high speeds and it “has been going on four 20 minutes,” Sunday. Another called in and said a man, possibly on the back of a motorcycle, had been hit with a baseball bat and needed medical care, while a third said “20-25 people were in the street, some with baseball bats and others with shovels” and there was a party nearby “and things were getting out of hand.” No further information was available.

Scam: A woman reported receiving texts from someone at an unknown number claiming to have nude photos of her that would be posted on social media if she didn’t send them $200, Thursday. Deputies told her it was likely a scam.

Bothersome: An Amsterdam man requested a welfare check on a woman because she wasn’t answering his calls, Saturday. He said she had his Jeep and was supposed to pick him up but didn’t show up. He said neither of them have a valid license and he just “wanted to make sure she was OK,” but if she was out “joyriding” with his vehicle, he wanted to pursue charges. Deputies said the woman was at her home and said she didn’t answer the phone because “he was harassing her.” She said he was intoxicated and couldn’t drive so he left the vehicle there but he “can come pick it up (anytime) as long as he is not intoxicated.”

Social media lie: A caller reported a large party involving underage drinking in Amsterdam, Saturday. The caller said his daughter got a Snapchat that said “there would be beer pong and drinking,” so he drove to the residence and “saw 30 teenagers at the residence, a tent in the backyard and cars parked out back.” Deputies spoke to the homeowner, who said the “Snapchat was fake and there is no party at the house.”

Reported: Someone reported hearing shots fired in the vicinity of Jefferson Lake State Park, Saturday. Deputies checked the area but found nothing amiss.

Gift card scam: A Wilson Avenue resident reported clicking on the wrong thing and someone immediately called purporting to be with Microsoft and said they could fix it, provided resident purchased a total of $2,500 in gift cards, Friday. The resident bought the 10 gift cards then relayed the numbers on the card to the fake Microsoft agent, who then called back “wanting $500 gift cards.”

Risky business: A caller said a white pickup with “12 or more females in the back” was driving through the neighborhood at speeds of 50 mph and higher, Friday. The caller called a second time and said the driver parked at a house not far away. Deputies were unable to speak with anyone at the residence.

Booked: Matthew Hawkens, 1701 township Road 304, Toronto, probation violation (Toronto county court) and a warrant for theft, Friday.
