Police reports

Steubenville Police

Theft charged: Two people who allegedly loaded a “full cart of groceries” from Kroger they hadn’t paid for into a red pickup were taken into custody, Tuesday. Police reported finding “a large amount of groceries piled up in the back seat” of the truck after an employee pointed them to the vehicle and the two people getting in it. Thomas L. Tennant, 30, and Marlana E. Hart, 32, both of 543 N. Fifth Street Toronto were booked for misdemeanor theft, police said. Because they already were on probation through Steubenville Municipal Court, they said Judge John Mascio Jr. ordered them held without bond. Police said 72 items valued at nearly $490 were recovered.

It’s a scam: A city resident said he and his family are receiving threatening messages from an unknown number claiming to have damaging photos of him that would be released “if (the extortionist) was not paid,” Tuesday. He said the extortionist also “made claims about knowing (his) place of work.” Police told him he and his family should block the number “and if the situation continues or worsens to change numbers.”

Wouldn’t budge: A resident in the 1100 block of Lincoln Avenue told police she was trying to turn into her driveway but “several juveniles refused to move” out of her way, Tuesday. She said it’s an ongoing issue, so police spoke with the mother of the kids involved who told them “there would be no further issues.”

Heard enough: An Adams Street resident complained that people in a neighboring apartment “have been yelling and causing a disturbance for several days,” Tuesday. Police tried to make contact with the residents causing the problem but got no answer.

Couldn’t stay away: The manager of a rental property in the 200 block of NorthCommercial Street reported a tenant who had been evicted from the property was back inside the apartment, Tuesday. She said the man had been given until Tuesday to gather his belongings and “was not not enter the residence without her permission due to the doorknob lock (being) changed and (her) having the keys to the residence” but had been inside. She said the man entered through an unlocked window so there was no damage to the new lock “and it appeared the (former) tenant was only there to clean and gather his belongings.”

Irresponsible: A Wellesley Avenue resident said she can’t find her handgun, Tuesday. She said she keeps it in the center console, Tuesday and last saw it on Sept. 29. She told police she “most likely accidentally left her vehicle unlocked.”

Jittery: A State Street resident told police she thought someone was standing on her porch, Tuesday. Police said there was no one on her porch or near her residence.

Toppled: A large tree came down in the 4100 block of Sunset Boulevard, Wednesday. Police said the tree was blocking both eastbound lanes of Sunset.

All clear: A Lawson Avenue resident said she thought she heard someone knocking on her back door, early Wednesday. Police checked the area and after speaking with her, said all appeared in order.

Parking issue: A caller complained of a box truck parked in the 400 block of McKee Street for several days, Tuesday. Police told the Hillary Square resident who left it there that city code prohibits trucks from being parked on the street and he could park it legally on private property. The resident said he will park it in his driveway.

Harris allegedly told police he swerved when he saw a southbound driver go left of center, and when his car started sliding on the wet pavement he overcompensated and ended up going over the curb and striking the light pole.

Damaged: A resident reported his vehicle was scratched while it was parked in the lower lot at Heritage Place overnight, Tuesday. He said there are several new scratches on the hood and driver’s side.
