Five charges filed: A man ended up in custody on multiple charges after a caller reported a shirtless man in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue “yelling and brandishing a firearm,” Sunday. Police allege the man was unarmed but “sweating profusely” and was “worked up and irate,” yelling that they needed to “keep (a woman walking by) away from (him)” and then calling for his mother. Police said he was “slurring his words and had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from (him)” that grew even stronger when he spoke and periodically became “very agitated.” Family members allege he had been “drinking and possibly smoking methamphetamine” and after they went to bed he “began yelling and causing a disturbance” and was “hitting his head off the ground,” telling police young kids in her home “are in fear of him and (she is) concerned for the current state he is in.” Police said they were taking the man into custody for intoxication/disorderly and domestic violence when he began resisting, allegedly hitting his head off the cruiser and then off the safety partition inside the vehicle. He eventually calmed down and claimed injuries on his face were caused by another individual hitting him, and while they were waiting for Steubenville firefighters to arrive to evaluate his condition police said he became agitated again, hitting his head on a block wall inside the jail as well as cell doors. When they tried to restrain him, police allege the man began spitting on them and correctional officers, yelling slurs and threatening inmates in holding cells so they had to put a spit mask on him but say he continued to behave aggressively and managed to get a leg free and kicked a firefighter in the face. Police said Alden Weidger, 20, 1225 Pennsylvania Ave., Steubenville, was charged with felony assault on a firefighter, felony assault on a police officer and felony harassment with bodily substance, as well as misdemeanor charges of underage consumption and intoxication/disorderly conduct.

Police were unable to contact the child’s parents.

Distressed: A woman claimed she was “almost assaulted inside her own apartment,” Monday. Police checked the property and said no one was inside. Later, they were called back to the same property because “someone keeps entering her apartment.” She was upset so deputies checked the property again but found no one though they did say the residence was in deplorable condition inside. She told police someone recently “broke into her vehicle through the spare wheel well and now her battery is dead.” Police said she’s made several calls about intruders during the past week and convinced her to go to the hospital for treatment.

This time, police spotted a firework “going across the roadway” and saw the same woman on her porch “near where the fireworks were located.” That officer initially warned her fireworks were not permitted in the city at that time of day but after she asked them “what the fine would be” the officer learned she’d been warned that same evening.
