Steubenville Police

Barged in: A man disrupted a service at a church on South Third Street, Sunday. Police were told the man was “loud and interrupting the service” and refused to leave when the pastor asked him to. The man causing the disruption said he “was upset but did not need any assistance other than a ride home,” which police provided.

Street fight: Callers reported finding an intoxicated male in the driveway of a home in the 300 block of Hollywood Boulevard, Saturday. Police said the man was “laying in the driveway, holding his head and slurring his speech” and they had difficulty understanding him, noting that he had “numerous abrasions on his face, his left eye appeared to be bruised and was beginning to swell shut, bite marks on his left leg and right arm and his mouth” was bleeding. He also had dried blood on his lips, which also were swollen. Bystanders reported seeing the victim and another man exit a detached garage in the 2400 block of Cherry Avenue fighting and said the man they’d found “rolled down the hill into the driveway. While the man was being loaded onto a cot for transport to the hospital, the other man allegedly exited the detached garage and advised him to “shut … up before he gets both of them in trouble.” When police asked the newcomer what had happened and if he’d been drinking, they said he told them they “didn’t need to know” before launching a profanity-laced tirade at them. Policed advised the man it wouldn’t end well if he tried to fight them and that he needed to leave the caller’s property, which he did after apologizing to the property owner. Hospital personnel reported the victim was “highly intoxicated.” Police were given surveillance video of the initial altercation between the men.

Runner: A woman is facing additional charges after she allegedly tried to flee custody, Saturday. Police reported they’d spotted Joni Hython, 411 Henry Ave., Steubenville, in the 400 block of North Fifth Street, but she fled, forcing them to chase her to Dock Street where she was taken into custody. Hython, 41, was served with a warrant for probation violation, but police said charges of possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia were added after a glass pipe and a bag containing a white powder believed to be cocaine were allegedly found in her possession. En route to the police station to pick up a copy of the warrant for her police said Hython told them she was having chest pains and needed to go to the hospital. Once there, police said Hython was advised she was not free to leave the premises but shortly after hospital personnel notified them she’d fled anyway. Police said they found in her in the back yard of a property next to St. Charles Drive so they tacked on two more charges, obstruction and escape.

Finger pointing: A caller reported a disturbance in the 1500 block of Plum Street, Saturday. Police located a couple who admitted arguing but said nothing physical had taken place. They said they were having ongoing issues with a downstairs neighbor harassing them and calling police every time she hears a noise and said they’ve argued over “how she is raising her small child.” The couple and the downstairs tenant were all advised to avoid further contact.

No longer welcome: A woman in the 2300 block of Chestnut Street said she needed police to tell a family member he is no longer welcome in her home, Monday. She said he’d been kicked out of his mother’s residence, so she let him stay with her, but that day he’d “been manic and had been using marijuana, which he does not react well to.” She said they’d argued, and she told him to leave but he refused but the argument continued until “he shoved her before running out of the residence.” She didn’t want him charged but told police she wanted him to be aware she doesn’t want him at her house anymore.

Overstepped: Debris was reported in the street in the 800 block of North Fourth Street, Saturday. Police said a sign had been placed in the middle of the street stating “Children at Play, Speed Limit 5 mph.” Police moved the sign to the sidewalk but were unable to speak with the person who put it in the street.

Police said he initially appeared to be unresponsive and was “sweating heavily,” but they tried talking to him and he claimed to be “just getting home” though his “pupils were pinpointed and he was fidgeting and slurring his words.” The male was transported to the hospital for treatment and issued a drug treatment form.

Vamoose: Two people were warned to leave Belleview Park after they were spotted lighting fireworks, Monday. Police were told the pair “went in the dugout and a small fire could be seen” on city cameras. They said there was no damage or debris from the fireworks in the park and they were advised city parks close at dark.

Charged: Two people are facing charges after employees at Wal-Mart told them they’d tried to leave without paying for merchandise, Sunday. Employees allege the pair “shopped around using a scan-and-go app, placing items in bags and “concealing other items not paid for under those bags.” Police said they also reported finding merchandise that hadn’t been paid for inside a backpack they’d scanned.
